Yes the hair above the forehead looks odd to me.......I can't imagine anyone retooling a Merc Dime, but it is strange???

  • I passed on it when I looked at it. It may be just a really crappy photo, or the coin may have been cleaned or something. I agree something is odd about it one way or another. Its too expensive and important a key to the set to take a chance for me.
  • Or Photochopped.......look at the difference in the toning of the metal and if you look, the hair on the "insert or weave" is from another photo.

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • There is no way that the strike on the hair can be that good with a major die crack at the east portion that is about a 1/16 th of an inch long between the "T" and "Y"

    maybe it's just me....

    but I doubt it.

  • Oh my god, that is such an egregious tool job, I'm shocked this seller is offering it, given a quick look at the other stuff he sells. And he call himself "key date coin" -- he should know better. That listing needs to be pulled.

Looks like the rev bands have been worked on to.

  • I emailed the seller regarding the tooling of the hair. Let's see if he does right and modifies or pulls the listing.

Who is actually going to buy a high grade 21 D unslabbed ? Maybe you could do that 30 years ago and not get ripped off, but now......

I e-mailed him as well, and have not heard back. I think this is worse than the Chinese scammers, as this is attracting bids, and the seller has a 2700 rating, giving the apperance of credibility. Also, the seller either knows it is tooled, or is the the dumbest 2700 rating coin dealer (I think the former is true). This is fraud at its worst. I think more of us should e-mail him and add that if he does not pull the auction, he will be reported to Ebay fraud.

Sorry for the rambling, but this one really boils my blood!!! imageimageimage
  • Ugh!!! I looked at a few of the seller's other items -- no toolies, but everything looks like it has been scrubbed with a Brillo pad!! This guy is Poe on steroids!!! I'm now convinced that he is selling the Mercury Toolie on purpose. If I don't hear from him by tomorrow, I'm notifying the Ebay fraud police.
  • Still no replies. Scumbag!!!
  • Still no replies. Reported to Ebay fraud. Auction ends in 3 hours, 5 bids, high $204. Should scumnuker snipe this one??

Retooled, or an out-and-out counterfeit? Sure does look fishy.

It looks like a VF coin with details tooled in the headdress on the obverse, and the "FSB" added on the reverse.
  • Well some poor sap sniped the coin for $572. Unbelieveable. I'd notify the guy, but Ebay would probably sanction me for interfereing with a "Powerscrewer's" auction.

Ebay / ANA Coinwatch is worthless. The decision to pull this auction should have been a "no-brainer" without need for an "investigation". imageimageimageimage
  • that is just sad

What is really sad is that this is not the first piece of junk this person has purchased on Ebay. He just keeps going back for punishment. Take a look at some of the stuff that has been purchased.

For sure more money than brains by a long shot. Oh well...as long as the person is happy.

  • There's a seller I won't be doing business with in the future. I emailed about the retooling and he never responded and he never altered the listing. I don't buy from dishonest people like that.image

  • This seller is now listing the most heavily whizzed 1916D ever as a VF coin.

This guy is on a roll. One key Mercury after another.
