P & D Mint Sets Q's

Is it common for folks to submit coins from gov't mint sets? in other words, do the high grade mint state coins usually come from mint sets?
What's the average grade of a coin plucked from a cellophane mint set?
What are the chances that my 1993 and 1994 mints sets have ms68+ in em?
Are the graded coins more valuable than the set as a whole? i.e. keep it in wrapper cuz it's not worth slabbing?

Supposedly he uncirculated mint set coins use a verticle press and more presure. Still, if they drop from this press they could still have a bit of damage.

By the by I opened one mint set and found the nickes to be very nice. The Kenndy's were not as good as my mint roll coins though.

I'd buy a mint set and see what I got. Seems it won't be all bad

It varies. I have seen some awesome stuff in rolls lately. Some mint sets are great and some are bad. I think that it is best to just keep it in the set until you are certain you have a super high grade.

  • Specifically 1993 and 1994 are bad years for quality. I don't think I've even ever bought a mint set from those 2 years, for every one I see is terrible. I've bought mint sets from almost all other years 1968-1998.
  • man, i was just looking at my 93 and 94 mint sets...ugly ugly ugly. I might have to unload these on ebay. but I was also thinking, hey, the nickels in there have got to be MS65FS on average which could bring in some bones. Then again, the slabbing fees would negate the profit. any thoughts?
