My first ex-Eliasberg...

My thanks to Dennis at Jade Rare Coin for sending this one my way. AU-62+, and ex-Eliasberg for good measure. I absolutely love it.

  • I have 7-8 of them myself. I love the history that goes with the coins.

  • I only have one Eliasberg - an 1883 No Cents 5c PCGS MS64.

It's one of my favorite coins because it comes with two stories I can tell about it.

Isn't that the truth? I devoured the Eliasberg auction catalog, read my QDB-autographed copy of "King of Coins" a couple times, and always wanted an Eliasberg piece. Not so much because of the pedigree -- okay, some for that -- but because of what this means in numismatic history, a collection that was, in quite a few ways, the most important collection in numismatic history. And if you took this coin out of the collection and didn't replace it, the history means so much less. Every single piece in that collection is crucial in making it special.

And now I look back at my copy of the May 1996 B&M Eliasberg catalog, look up Lot #862, and say "Wow. That's my coin." image

I really regret that I don't have an Eliasberg MS Seated Dollar. I did have one, the 72-S, but it had been dipped and lost the pedigree [tho I knew it was the same coin]. I decided to keep the Share coin, which was more original looking.

I do have one Gobrecht, one Proof Seated Dollar, two MS Trade Dollars and two Proof Trade Dollars from his collection, tho.

Someone dipped an Eliasberg coin? image

TDN - sounds like you've got it pretty well-covered even in the absence of a MS Seated coin.
  • Hi,
congratulations, and nice coin! I hope to have a coin from his collection - awesome history there.

I think this qualifies for that award that goes around on this board once in a while.....The title slips my mind at the moment.....

  • Nice trime. I'd like to have an Eliasberg, one day, even if it is one of his lesser pieces.

I owned nearly 40 Eliasberg coins at one point after the auction but now only have 2 small cent patterns. There's a guy on the forum that keeps trying to pry them out of my tightly clenched hand!imageimage

I own one ex Eliasberg MS TD. Nothing else (yet) from that collection.

How does one get a hater to stop hating?

  • Here's another Eliasberg coin that we recently added to inventory. Unfortunately, this example is not a very nice one and was over-graded by ANACS, imho. The coin has virtually no luster and has some scratches near stars 11 and 12. It also is just not very attractive, at least not in my opinion. Still, it does have some historical significance due to the pedigree. It should be graded EF-45 or so, but probably got a bump because of the pedigree. Must be that "gradeflation" thing....
