Are these adjustment marks?

    Hi Barry,

    I'm having somewhat of a difficult time with the images, but, if you are asking about the areas I think you are, those likely would not all be adjustment marks. Adjustment marks are not typically seen over that large of an area of a coin's surfaces.

    I'm referring to those, more or less, horizontal marks all over both sides. I've never seen anything like that. On the obverse the devices and fields are involved, which make me think scrtaches, but on the reverse, they don't seem to involve the devices, for the most part.
    BTW, this coin is from ANR's listing of an upcoming Stack's auction.

  • They do not look like it, especially by the leave below the word OF and the eagles wing. If they were when the piece was struck the metal flow would make it so they would not appear on devices in relief. It appears to be post strike damage of some kind, they also look to wide as adjustment marks are usually thinner deeper looking grooves. These look shallow and flatter then normally seen.

  • I agree, planchet striations. The rollers really needed some polishing to remove roughness.
