Advice on Selling

I am a collector. I have rarely sold any coins and what I have sold wasn't of any great value.
However, I do want to sell one particular coin. It is certified by NGC and would likely sell between $10K and $20K.
Should I consign it to an auction house or list it on Ebay? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • List on ebay or send to someone like Carl Wohlforth to sell for you. You might also list on teletrade.

I also love to go through rolls to find coins.

Heritage is normally good with higher auctions...May I ask what coin?

Riceman, I don't think most coins in that value range are particularly well suited for Ebay or Teletrade. The best method and place to sell it would depend upon what type and quality of coin it is.

Feel free to send me or others a private message (if you don't know how to turn on your Private Message function we can help you) to discuss the various possibilities.
  • Sometimes eBay can work with an expensive coin like that. However Coinguy1 has a good point, it depends on the coin. Heritage Signature auctions get good publicity. Also a dealer who specializes in the coin you want to sell may already have a buyer for it so might be able to get you a good price quickly.

If you are a long-time, well known and trusted seller with a significant feedback history, yes. If you have little or no feedback, forget about getting close to what the coin is worth -- in that case, you'd be better off consigning it off-eBay or finding a trusted eBay seller who takes consignments.

Most of the people on this board would not touch such a valuable item from a low-feedback buyer, and many would suspect it's a scam -- and with good reason, based on our experiences.
  • I believe I turned my PM on.
    The coin is a 1857 $1 in MS64.
    Thanks for the advice.
  • If you think it is a coin that for sure two collectors want right now, a major auction would be good. Otherwise if you think a dealer is going to buy it out of an auction, mine as well try to seek out that dealer first and sell it directly to him/her.
