What is a bid board?

Inquiring minds want to know.
Young Numismatist that collects: Morgan Dollars, SAE, Proof Sets, and Liberty Nickels.
I also love to go through rolls to find coins.

it's when your sick & tired of bidding (bored), but you do anyway.

  • Bid boards are a large bulletin type board on the wall at a local coin shop where customers come and place coins for auction on a weekly basis. During the week as customers come and go they check the board and write down their bids on any coins they are interested in. In my local coin shop, the bidding ends at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon. The customers all come down to the shop and the final sniping takes place then the auction is ended. They also have a raffle for the "Bid Board Prize" among the attendees. The buyers and sellers who are present can settle up their account on the spot or the dealer will handle the transaction over the next few days as customers return to see if they won. It's a lot of fun!
  • It's kind of a real world version of ebay without proxy bidding. Coins are up for bids and the high bidder when the time runs out wins the coin. They even have sniping. When it get down to the last few moments popular lots will have people hanging around waiting to try and pop in a last moment bid right before the closing bell.
