    Don: Thanks. image

What I find neat about the Proof Plat series is that one gets both the beauty of the proof coins (including 1 year type design changes for each year) as well as the SUPER LOW MINTAGES. In many other (essentially non-circulating) modern coin series, the MS coins come with the low mintages, not the Proofs (e.g. Half Dollar, Dollar, $5 Gold Commems).

Interestingly, the $50 Proof Plats sport some of the LOWEST mintages among ALL modern coins. Back in 2001 for example, the mint sold a scant 8,200 proof $50 coins (compare this to, say, the 1/4 MILLION MS $100 Plats struck between 1997-1999) to the world - and I say world, because these coins may have appeal outside the US.

So, just how "cheap" are some of these Plat proof coins right now? Well, consider the (once highly unpopular) Smithsonian MS69 $5 gold Commem with a mintage of around 9,000 coins and about $100 in base (gold) metal content is presently being offered on ebay around $900 and on a major dealer's website right now at close to $1,100. By comparison, that 2001 Proof Plat Eagle I mentioned with a mintage of 8,200 coins and a base (platinum) metal value of around $425 is available for around $100 or so over spot in PCGS-PR69DCAM grade!

    Congrats again Don!

P.S. Incidently, I personally love the Smithsonian MS $5 Gold coin and bought one myself recellty for my Registry set. No attack on that coin here!

  • Congrats on a Great set, Don.
I'm suprised that your '98 is not a 70,... but I'm sure that Mitch is working on that for you. image

I am also very surprised by how inexpensive these are on the after market. I have gotten them from the mint through the years and "made" most of my set. I also went with the half-ounce coins as they are still fairly large and have the lowest mintages. Not long after I recieved the '03 from the mint, I discovered that they could be bought for less on eBay. I picked up a '03, already slabbed (PR69DCAM), for about $100 less than I had just bought one from the mint.

I can't believe that the beauty of these coins has been overlooked by collectors. IMO, they are some of the prettiest coins that the mint has ever produced. Along with the low mintages, their beauty makes them rare pieces of art. As a set, I don't know of a prettier one! With the mint raising the prices for '04, the mintages are sure to be even less and may cause the mint to stop producing them. I believe that these "Vistas" will, some day, have their day in the sun! image

"I can't believe that the beauty of these coins has been overlooked by collectors"

Don: I can believe it - often times "modern" coins get lumped together and proof 1/2 oz Plats with mintages as low as 8,200 coins (and most not much higher) get lumped in with, say, proof Lincoln cents with mintages of 3,000,000 or so when one speaks of how common they are.

I get in very few PR70 Plat coins each year (heck last I looked there were just around 2 dozen $100 Proof Plats graded 70 by PCGS since the Plat program began in 1997!) These coins are but a very, very tiny portion of my overall business (and I also sell very few PR69 coins - just to registry guys who need them for a set). There is basically nothing to "hype" here, because there has been nearly no product to sell in this area of the market! I just enjoy identifying interesting coins - with no guarantees of course the series will ever be discovered in our lifetime (they may a "asleep" for a long, long time as opposed to "sleepers" - time will tell image

  • Mitch,

The mint could have stuck in the word "Commemorative" and it would have been a different "ballgame"! image
With the changes in the reverses, it would have been most appropriate!
I still enjoy the fact that I own the only U.S. coin with an alligator on it! image

As for collecting moderns, I enjoy the beauty that the modern techniques produce. There's something 'bout "classics" as there is about beautiful moderns! From Standing Libs to Statue of Libs, they're all pretty neat! image

  • The platinum coins are nice. I'm surprised they are so overlooked. I was thinking of doing a $10 set soon, as it's doable with my current budget.

  • Platinum coins are like at the top of the creme-de-la-creme of coin collecting.
    Great set you got there.
