Cameo/Deep Cameo vs. A Beautifully Toned proof

I personally would rather own a gorgeously toned proof with its original skin.
My take on many cameo and deep cameo proofs are that they have been dipped. They will eventually retone but their original (stable) skin has been lost.

Which do you prefer ?

i would take the deep cameo if the deep cameo if it was lightly toned and was dipped then was properly neutralized and now had deep clean clear non cloudy non hazy mirrors and i would take the originally toned coin too i would love both

  • I am a Deep Cam kinda guy. A perfect example is the 1899 Barber Quarter that is PR69DCAM that to me is one one of the prettiest coins that I have ever seen.

I beleive one of our forum members owns the coin. (I am going from memory so I don't remember which one)......image

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

DCAM is awesome. But I will always take beautiful tone over dipped. As far as I can see on my one and only classic proof, it is cam and hasn't been dipped (when I see it in person, I can see other things which leads me to that conclusion) to the best of my knowledge.

i'm not a real big fan of cameo's anyway, so it really wouldn't matter to me.

I try not to own blah white coins with no character. IMO, it's a numismatic sin to dip a nicely toned coin in an attempt to bring out the DCAM.

The part about cameo proofs that i like are the mirrors. Frost is OK but mirrors are better. Cameo proofs generally provide much better mirrors. I like a little toning in general as long as it's light. I don't like the toning to cover up the detail of the design.

Stewart, If you like coins with their original skin, you better start buying them up. More and more of them get 'conserved' and/or dipped and consequently ruined IMO with each passing year.

Every year I go to shows I see more and more dipped out lifeless slugs than the year before, this especially applies to Morgan dollars and 19th century proof type coins. I also see quite a few Trade and Seated dollars in PCGS and NGC holders that have that awful greyish dipped out look to them. I can actually envision a day where an original undipped, unmessed with coin willl actually be a rarity in itself.

oldcameoproofsguy - you have the longest nic and the most beautiful deep green Barber on the forum. I get lost in the reverse, must be awesome in person.

Stewart - when it comes to proof copper nothing compares to the depth of color that appears on the tissue-toned mirrored monsters, they blow the pure red cameos away in the first 5 seconds.
