Just how rare is this coin?

The links below are for a half dollar I got today that I have identified as a 1795 O.114. It appears to be an R.6 coin in the Overton book and there are none slabbed at NGC. This CC on th e coin in Overton was something like (25,20,15,12,8). Looking at the dies in the book, they are very weakly struck and I'd guess this coin pushes F12 with that considered, unless the coin in the book is the VG8 image Anyway, I need guidance on this coin as to what the best course of action is. I am a Morgan man and I will want to push this toward the right outlet.

No clue on your questions, but great pictures. Maybe this'll bump it up so someone smarter than me can help you out. image

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • Attribution is right and Ovrton does say R-6,someone posted in the last couple days a link to the current rariety rating for all of the early half varieties but I'm not having any luck finding it..

The current rarity rating for 1795 O.114 is still R.6. Send PM if you would like to sell.

  • Bill,
Thanks for your help on this. I am a dealer from Greensboro NC and I'm not afraid to tell someone when I'm in deep water. I am one of the top guys in the Morgan VAM market, but I'm at the bottom of the totem in the early bust half world. I don't mind selling a coin at a decent price (in other words, I don't need every last retail dollar), but I do need to continue learning. Do you know the source for the current ratings on Bust material, and a way to gauge pricing based on rarity?

PS. I will sell the coin. I just require an education before I do.

    Ash,

The best way to judge value on an R.6 rarity is to use previous auction prices. The last one that sold was in 2002, a G6 original with no problems for $2245. A G5 with a large scratch sold for $908 in 1992. Higher grades have sold privately, I do not have prices for them.

You could also consult Sheridan Downey for an opinion. He is a PNG dealer who specializes in Bust Halves and has sold many of the R.6 - R.8 rarities over the past 15 years.

The source of the current rarity ratings is from a BHNC study just released at the ANA, and will be in the next John Reich Journal, but O.114 has not changed from R.6.

Because few people collect Flowing Hair halves by die variety, there will be less of a premium for rarity on a R.6 FH than a R.6 capped bust half.
