If Derek Jeter turned into Mario Mendoza would he be HOF material

Derek Jeter has an a good 8 year run. This year he has been mediocre. If next season he turned into Mario Mendoza, and batted mostly .200, or as high as .250, only hit single digits in HRs, very few RBI, and had a low on base percentage for the rest of his career, would he be Hall of Fame material? Don Mattingly had 7 great season, but will probably not get in for a while, if at all. If Jeter does terribly, would he even have his number retired? Steinbrenner retired Regiie's # even though he only had 5 seasons in NY, but if Jeter stays on the Yanks and is terrible, would Steinbrenner turn him into Dave Winfield?

  • I wouldn't call Jeter mediocre this year. Yes his #'s are mediocre, but that is because of a horrible start. He has been very good since. He was under .200 nearly 1/3 of the way into the season, and is now above .280. I don't see Jeter turning into Mario Mendoza anytime soon.
  • Fighting for a batting title last year, then hovering around .275 is a pretty big decrease. What if Jeter has anopther horrible start, but this time can't get out of it? the difference between bad players and great players, other than talent, is the the great players can bounce back from an off year.
  • Jeter could always end up having an injury and never be the same. Look at what happened with Mattingly and his back. If anything like that happened to Jeter, would he still be HOF material if he played another 7 years, but mediocre, or bad years?

Jeter will always be a Yankee great, no matter what happens from here out. After either the Twins or the Red Sox humiliate the Yanks in the post season, Jeter and A-Rod will switch positions strengthening the Yanks infield and order will be restored to the universe in '05.

Well in my 9 months here this is the first anti-Jeter thread that Gemmy10 didn't post on within 6 hours. I’ve tried my best to sneak them by him with vague titles, but no such luck. Once this gets bumped to the sports talk forum I give it 90 minutes.
