Today's Coin Shop Finds-All IKEs! IKEsters, Please Look-New Variety??

Okay, so I was reading SemperFi's post on the RDV-006 for the 1971-D dollars and it got me curious and interested.

Today, I left work early to go to the coin shop in case they were closing for Hurricane Ivan. Turns out they are staying open for normal hours.

Anyway, as usual, they had a box of roughly 2,000 IKEs. I searched EVERY SINGLE ONE. I do this every now and then in case I find something intersting. Usually, I find only one coin to buy.

This time around, I was searching for allot of things and came up with these below. Some pictures follow.

1. Out of maybe 500 1971-D IKEs, I found 4 of the RDV-006 varieties. Am very happy about these, now I just need more information on them. All of these are uncs.

2. I found 2 1972-D Peg Leg IKEs. These are uncs, but dirty. And, for $2.00, I could afford it.

3. I found a very nice, MS65 quality (PCGS standards), 1974-D Peg Leg! Pictured below.

4. This is a new one on me, but it stuck out like a sore thumb when I was searching. A Type 1 1972-P Peg Leg! Also pictured below. I went back and search through another maybe 100 type 1 and 3 IKEs in the box and none were like this. Does anyone know anything about these?

Thanks, Richard.

You may be right, but some dates and mm will be much tougher than others. Take for instance the widely known 1971-S business strikes and the 1972-D. Each are well known and each command a premium, but the premium for the 71S is far more than a 72D. Finding a 71S will take looking through possibly thousands of coins where the 72D can maybe be had by looking at 100?

The 72P that I found is the first I have ever seen and I have seen literally thousands of 72P dollars. As for the 74D, I have heard about it but never found one.

We might have to start doing something similar to VAM numbers for IKEs. imageimage We can call them "Rampage" numbers. Or "Ramp" for short. image

Are we now calling peg legs peg legs if they have the vertical portion without serifs???

I always thought peg legs needed that + the straight serif.

With the later criteria, you have something. With the former critieria you don't.

    Just MHO!

Maybe different degrees pf legleggedness?? I do know that they are unlike any of the "normal" issues. I thought they were nice.

Can you please post a picture of what is THE "Peg Leg"? And what we need to look for on a peg leg?

Rampage, congrats on the finds ! you are right, of course about the peg legs. i have looked at several thousand coins and not find a 1971-S peg leg in business strike. i only have a few after several years of searching.
from my point of view they are at least 20 tomes more difficult than yhe 1972-P Type # 2.
myself and a couple more people have pretty much cornered the market on pcgs certified type # 2 coins.
however, the 1971-S is so rare, that this is very unlikely to happen.
it usually takes searching many thousands of coins to find even 1 1971-S peg leg business strike, and then the coin will only grade ms 63. if you are very lucky it might grade ms 64. a ms 65 coin or above, is indeed a rare coin !!!!!
