how did PCGS come up with the starting date of 1941. I do like the idea of the Mercury dime short set however. NO matter what the starting date is

    Hi Pat,

There are two dates which have been traditional starts for "short sets...1934 and 1941. It has nothing to do with logic, it's just tradition. The 1934 date has to do with the fact that BU rolls began to be save in greater quantities starting in 1934. Rolls before 1934 are very rare. The 1941 start date had to do with the fact that the old Whitman coin albums divided the Walking Liberty half dollar series into two parts...1916 to 1940 and 1941 to 1947. There was only room in those three "page" coin folders for the 1916 to 1940 halves, so the late dates had to go into another folder, volume 2 if you will.

So we did the Mercury short set as 1941 to 1945 as is the tradition. 1940-1945 would be more logical, and we'll change it if Registry participants want it that way.

    Thanks,

    David
