1968-D full steps

This coin just closed on E-bay. I have seen the coin in person. It is very nice for a 68-D!

Congrats Mitch!

Mark: Thanks. Yes, I saw that you had once owned the coin and let it go because you felt it was not FS. Obviously, if it was a "true" FS to the "PCGS standard" we might have been bidding against each other at the $30,000+ level (not the $1300 level). image Hopefully, the coin will be a nice "stepping stone" coin - where I can spend the next year or two trying to improve upon the step count for that date.

  • Are you going to crack/cross it to pcgs and use it for your registry as a non-FS coin?

I did let it go at the price I bid on it. I think what you paid for it was reasonable. I would like to hear your thoughts on it when you get it.

  • A very nice strike and steps about as good as they get on a 68D.

I checked the description on the coin in my set it is a PCGS MS66 and using the PAC quarter step method it is 4 3/4 steps. I also noted it is prooflike.

I am going to take a day off in October and attempt to take pictures of my MS set to include in the registry.

It's good to see your enthusiasm for a tough non FS nickel! I was in contact with
the seller as well. The guy doesn't own a computer so comunication was slow. In
his description he refered to my ANACS 64 5 step coin. But he insisted that there
were two coins at his kitchen table and a friend of his and himself each bought a
coin from someone and I'm assuming that was (edited out).
The seller also said he had both coins certified, that they both came back full steps. But he also
insisted that the ANACS pop report only shows 2 68-D's certified. Go figure!
Aside from all that the coin failed to find a home in a couple of Teletrade auctions.
The coin sold for $2600 and $1600 over a year ago. It's the same coin as the seller
informed me. I was considering the coin myself until I noticed the fingerprint on the
reverse side. The seller gave several assorted descriptions about the steps that
included bridges, nicks, dings to a 6546 1/4 step count. Here's the Teletrade pic,
the coin looks very nice but there appears to be a nick by the eye and a little
roughness on the cheek. Congrats to you!

    Leo,

I never sold the coin. I just returned it from the Teletrade sale.

At least we know that's not your fingerprint or PCGS's for that matter! image

    Work that magic Mitch!

...........and if that coin magically makes it into a PCGS FS holder it may be time to abondon the series as judged and certified by PCGS. it's a very fine coin, but most definitely not FS. in my thread about it at the U.S. Forum there were a couple of members who wondered if it could be holdered by PCGS as FS. as i stated there, no way. why all the fuss about a coin which is a gem in it's own right without the designation?? can't we enjoy it for what it is and not for what it might wrongly be called??

"can't we enjoy it for what it is and not for what it might wrongly be called??"

Al: Exactly! I did not bid on this coin expecting the coin to cross. It really never even entered my mind. If it had - my bid would have been 10x what it was on that coin.

Incidently, on a Jeff related subject - I have now rounded up (3) 1997 MS69FS Jeffs which I will send over to DH to review in the very near future. My suspicion is all (3) coins will likely be redesignated as common SMS coins and the pop report will be further cleaned up. Just doing my part image

I also have a 1997-P Jefferson in MS69. The coin does NOT indicate SMS on the holder, but in my registry set, it lists as an SMS coin. The coin is by the way an SMS that was holdered prior to the SMS designation for this date.
