It didn't appear cleaned at all in the auction pics but it sure does in hand. Can anyone with the book help me with an attribution? Thanks.

Very typical for bust material and does not detract from eye appeal. Nice coin!
  • Probably a soft bristle toothbrush dipped in silver polish or something similar. The gouge has me thinking that some kind of pointy tool was used to get down into the fine details and the persons hand slipped.

  • Very obviously cleaned, but that's very commom for Bust coinage.

Very much cleaned, but at least it has nice detail..... So were the top two pics in the auction listing, or did they use different photos??

No, all the pics in the first post of the thread were taken by me tonight. Below is the auction photo.

  • Looks like Liberty was face down and stepped on with a slide on the push off. I tested this with a Lincoln and it looks similar.

Edited to add.... The gouge is in the auction photo. Did you notice it and bid anyway to complete a set?

It's truly funny, no make that truly sad, that people in this day and age are so wrapped up in their own little world that they refuse to try and teach someone else the correct or accepted way of doing things.

yeah i noticed the gouge in the photos, pulled the trigger and sniped it anyway image
  • Looks like they cleaned it before sending it to you.

whatever happened, it sure doesnt look like it did in the auction pics.
  • Common photography trick for ebay coins. Low light and no flash. Hides a multitude of evils. The gash on the obverse is visible in the auction photo, so I don't think it was switched. Did you even notice that when you first saw the listing?

that kind of cleaning can be easily hidden. get buddy-buddy w/ any competent coin doctor & the coin can look just fine.

i happen to like the coin a lot.

btw, although that is commonly called "cleaned", the reality is those hairlinles are very likely just slide marks. are they on the rev too? if so, then it probably is wiped.

just what I was going to say, dork.

some folks think "cleaned, and harshly" whenever they see a few hairlines.

I think this is incidental friction from sliding on surfaces, not a heavy cleaning.

No, only the obverse seems to have the damage to it.

in that case, keep the coin. it is just slide marks.

there's a thick cloud of sweeping paranoia on this forum when it comes to the concept of "cleaned" coins. yes, original is best, but a 170 y-o coin that's been through the wars can be forgiven it it actually shows signs of CHARACTER.

how will YOU look at age 170?

if it were a common date morgan, i'd say melt it. but you have a nice coin there, & should simply enjoy your tenure as it's owner. i congratulate you!
