Jefferson getting a makeover on nickel being revealed Thursday

WASHINGTON - Thomas Jefferson is getting a makeover, the first since his face was put on the nickel in 1938. It's the latest in a series of design changes for the coins.

Designs for two new nickels will be revealed Thursday by the U.S. Mint, where the nation's coins are made. The revamped nickels will be issued in 2005.

A new portrait of Jefferson, the third president, will be on the front of the two new coins. Each coin also will have a change on the back, ``with one of the designs harking back to a favorite coin of the American people,'' the Mint said. The announcement gave no further details.

In today's NN, there are pictures of the submitted designs. I had to laugh out loud at a couple of them!!

I'll bet the reverse of one will be the Buffalo. I liked the "Charging Buffalo" design.

this really is old news!!! some of the designs were first out at the beginning of the year, March maybe, and all of them were on display in mid-August at the ANA. while some were certainly "busy" and others mundane, quite a few were pleasing in appearance.

I liked very few of the obverse versions in the Numismatic news. One that I did like was the classic version of the orginal design...I can't remember the artist's name.
