Calling All Bust Coin Collectors! Help Needed

Hey all you Bust Collectors image I need some help, and it mostly revolves around you looking at coins in your collection... image I'm looking for (to study, look at, etc.) Bust coins that appear to have been struck with cocked dies... one of the tell-tale signs, is a weakness in the rims along one side, while the opposite side of the coin has strong, tall, thick rims... It also seems to result in uneven wear... I have one coin showing this, if you have a coin fitting this description, please, let me know, and if able, post pictures... Thank you friends image

George, here is an 1834 that has weakness in the uri of Pluribus and the A in States is extremely weak. There is also less rim in this area. I have seen other 1834's like this, some worse and some not as bad as this one. The obverse seems to be weak at the bust area, which is the same area of the reverse weakness. I figured there was a flaw in the planchet thickness to cause this, don't know for sure though. Hope this helps. image

  • I don't know, kinda hard for me to tell with the pictures... are the denticles weak and non-existant at the weak point in the rim? If not, it's probally just a misaligned die...

    George,
Here is an 1827 half that was struck with the hammer die at such an angle that you can actually lay the coin on a flat surface and rock it back and forth.

P.S. How did you get away with co_cked? I get a nasty note. image
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

    George...

I've looked at my entire capped collection (6 coins! haha) and here are the two that kinda display what you're talking about....I think. Bust Collectors Unite!

  • Here's a coin that I just purchased that is very much showing the traits that you're talking about.

The rims from about 4:00 to 6:00 on both the obverse and reverse are weak and almost nonexistent. The opposing sides of the coin show a well struck rim. There is some uneveness in the wear as seen in the uri of pluribus.

1804 Dimes are notorious for this striking characteristic.
