1955 BOWMAN COLLECTORS, question about size

Does size matter? I recently bought 26 nrmt-mt commons, all of which are very nice shape. Just that 5 or 6 of them seem about 1/32 of an inch short top to bottom. ANy way to tell if these are trimemd? ALl corners seem to have the same wear, and I remember reading somewhere these cards did vary a bit in size. DO you guys think they will make the grade??

I was recently informed that 1955 Bowman's often come in different sizes. They can be factory oversized or undersized as much as 1/4". I do not have any experience with this seller, but if the size of the cards is the only issue, you may be fine.

"Mikeschmidt" can answer this question much better than I.

There is a pretty wide variation in the length of these cards, as in most older sets. But these maybe are in the 1/16" range long or short, so a 1/8" variance overall. Even if it came from the factory, any card as short or long as 1/4" is a miscut. You might be able tell if your short cards are trimmed basically by closely examining them and comparing them with good cards, and with the other edges on the same cards. Depending on the skill of the surgeon, it might be obvious or not really visible without a high-power lens. I'd have to say that a group of 26 55s, all similarly short, and all similarly in decent condition sounds a little fishy, but you never know.

Hard to say for sure - you would really have to examine the edges under loupe to see if there are discrepancies/differences between the edges of some of the cards (or some of the cards' edges) versus others.

This set is all over the place on size - I've had some that are 1/4" short that are factory-cut short, and I've submitted many that get the MINI SIZ grade from PSA, instead of "evid of trim".

That being said - the sizes run both small and large. If you have a lot where ever card measures either to the "standard" size or shorter, I would view that as a general red flag. Some should be larger than standard, and some shorter. 26 is obviously an insufficient sample size. And many larger ones have unfortunately gotten trimmed down to standard size - so one must be quite careful with raw (and, to a lesser extent, graded....)

I recall a couple times when Schmidt was in one of those long 0-25 slumps and he just couldn't, for the life of him, hit the ball solid, if he hit it at all. You can imagine the names that came to mind for most loud-mouthed fans at the Vet then.

this isn't spreading rumor, this is telling a factual story-

when a joined CU a few years ago, the big topics revolved around fake modern patch cards. apparently, several losers were cutting up store bought jerseys and inserting the patches on to regular game jersey cards- thus making them much more valuable.shaqfu1 (also red-zone on ebay) had a huge number of multi color patch cards. i knew they busted a ton of modern wax, but some of the stuff they had was absolutely amazing. i did some research, and found a Mike Schmidt patch they were selling. only problem was, the patch was one of those 125th MLB patches from the 1994 season- several years after Schmidt retired. i emailed them and told them that i was contacting the FBI's "Operation Foul Ball" (their fake memorabilia investigation) and reporting them for selling hundreds of fake patches. sure enough, shaqfu1 pulled all of their 250+ fake auctions. they never resurfaced, and i never saw em selling any other fake patches.

i have no idea about their other auctions, but my story should tell you something about the legitimacy of their stuff

Sorry Schmidt, have to admit I got a good laugh out of my own stupidity. I believe they may have been larger, and trimmed down. Contact Shaqfool1 tonight.
  • Shaqfu1 (red-zone) Doesn't believe they are trimmed, but they are ready to issue a refund for the cards if I would like. Just not willing to take a chance on this guy. The cards is short top to bottom not left to right BTW.
  • Does size matter? Now that question is invading my hobby world as well image.
  • Just to put the other side - the only cards I have bought from this seller were 8 HOF Auto cards. They came carefully packed, via Registered Mail and all were subsequently authenticated & graded by PSA.

    I would happily bid again.
