It'll go closer to $300-$350... maybe more for the color...

  • My bid was just a joke. I saw onlyroosies was bidding and I know he wants it more than $50 worth or he wouldn't have bothered with it. He'll come back and cream us both with an amazingly high bid. I checked pops, though. NGC shows 360 of those in MS68, which seems like way too many since PCGS doesn't show any, so I don't think there's a very high probability of crossing it over.

  • I came up with $200 based on some heritage auction prices realized for ngc ms68. Non-toned ms68 goes for ~$100, toned ~$170+

Isn't that a significant hit on the neck above the date? and with that strike. Give it a star for the toning but not a 68.

  • It doesn't look like a hit. It looks like a place that didn't tone or where the toning flaked off. Like I said, I don't agree with the grade simply because of the numbers. I find it hard to believe that PCGS has never graded a 45S Merc in 68 and NGC has 360 to their credit. Either NGC is too loose with Mercs, or PCGS is too stingy.

I can't believe NGC slabbed that coin, it looks AT to me.

  • Hoard coin...NGC overgraded junk. I remember some years back when these were made, they flooded the market for many months.

  • These are great coins. I have two. They are all 1945-S and most all were graded MS 67 - MS 68 by NGC. It is said they were stored in a cardboard holder with a slit down the middle with the reverse facing out so the fasces didn't tone. It shouldn't go for more than $250 image

It seems now, that the grading services don't penalize a coin for weak strikes anymore... I have a '44-S graded MS-66 by PCGS, that has ann EXTREMELY mushy strike... the sticks on the lower fasces are just about completely molded together, and there are plenty of spots where they do connect... not a GEM+ coin, IMHO...

Maybe the dime is blue, because its a little depressed.
There once was a place called

  • going back to the overgraded debate on this coin...in addition to the extremely mushy strike, it looks like there are some serious marks on the fasces (two nicks side by side below center band) that would prevent this coin from going 68. Sheesh, this one is probably deserving of 66! (66 star if resubmitted to NGC). Still, you can't deny its beauty.
