British uncommon wealth

I finally got a British Honduras 25 cent piece for my George V commonwealth collection of shillings and equivalents.

I was outbid (by over 200%) on the 1919 25 cent piece in the latest Heritage auction, but I picked up a set of 25 cent pieces from 1894 to 1992. The coin above was included in the lot and is cleaned with XF details. It's a start. At least it didn't cost me $863! This is the first British Honduras 25 cent piece in decent shape I've ever seen for sale, and it was the only one I could afford. image

I also got a better Cyprus 9 piastres for my set. I'll post scans later.

Does anyone else collect British Honduras?

The dark spots bother me a bit, but the coin has AU details (the reverse looks especially nice).

That's a pretty nice 25c. The Cyprus one would be awesome without the spots.. still great though! image

I actually thought about doing the exact same thing you are.. but I always get sidetracked image I wanted to focus on shilling-size coins, that turned into all commonwealth coins (which the shilling size was supposed to limit in the first place), then I went off into French & Portuguese colonials, and now I don't exactly remember what I was supposed to collect image But I think I'm going to go find a South African shilling now, still don't have one of those. image

I collect British Honduras cents. The British Honduras coins in the Long Beach HWCA all went for two or three times estimates. It was very tough to score any of them.

My favorite dealer tries to sell me British Honduras copper whenever I bring up the country in question. He doesn't seem to remember that I only collect BH silver, and he reminds me that he has some nice AU and UNC pieces over and over.

Who's the dealer. I live in the "Big OC" also, so maybe I can check him out.

Unfortunately, he's in the hospital now and his second in command never knows where he stashes his good stuff.

  • Nice pieces! My best George V British Honduras and Cyprus silvers are G, and VG respectively. I don't think I've even seen a British Honduras 25c in better than F/VF until now!
  • Congratulations!!! image
