My first coin show was a flop!

I'm not even considering it a coin show...What it was was two old men in a basement trying to sell there coin collections. I could not find anything that said buy me. I made it there two hours prior to the coin show closing and they said there were more people there but they left due to lack of people comming in.
To add to the mess, I took a wrong turn and ended up doing a 50 mile loop ending back where I started to finally figure out the right way. I figured I would find something, forcemyself to find something if I had to but all it was was some over priced junk collections
(Yes, I used the "was was" phrse twice in one post....weird)

The first one I approached the guy aaskes us if we were new collectors or seasoned collectors, I told him I was new...He about jumped over the table to tell us how important it is to buy coins that are close to bullion and he quickly directed my attention to his raw slidding all over the place SAE. He then pushed a raw Franklin half set and told me to stay away from the Morgans, "I never liked them, never will" I believe is what he said. He also told us he was getting out of the business.
The second table that I went to was an elderly couple that was selling his collection. The coins were not that great but I gave them a looksee. The lady felt compelled to contunie to tell us that he had a stroke and that they are trying to sell the collection before he dies because she did not want to be left with them... I just wanted to cry right there I did not buy anything though, i felt like I was being pressured into buying them with the stroke story...
We left with buying only two little doilys (SP?) that my daughter had to have for her stuffed animal collection.
Oh, the "show" was in Dickson county TN I believe.

I'll bet he hasn't much choice with the "wonderful" advice and wares he peddles.
Sorry you had such a washout.
On the bright side the next show is bound to be better.

It appears that nowadays, the dealers all start to pack up and leave early.
Thus for a weekend, two and a half day show, you have to get there no later than around 1:00PM on Saturday.
I've gone at 10AM on a Saturday, and seen empty tables were some dealers left after Friday.
A number of the dealers now leave after the Saturday show, thus Sunday is now becoming a wasteland of empty tables.
Some dealers only go to show/sell to their big customers some rare coins and then they leave afterwards too.
Some dealers have other commitments so they try to hit more than one show on a weekend.
Fortunately, not all coin shows go that badly, it depends on their popularity, etc.
Like he said, the show is in Franklin, TN and is monthly. The dates for the rest of 2004 are 9/18, 10/16, 11/13, 12/18.
Hours are 9:30 - 4:00. Admission is free.
Location is the Super 8 Motel, I-65 at Hwy 96 exit. The hotel is about 1/4 mile West of the exit, on the right.
This was my first coin show experience earlier this year. Most of the dealers are very friendly and have a good mix of slabbed/raw coins. I haven't noticed too many moderns, however. There are 1 or 2 currency dealers as well.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
I have one in my area thats great. They have about 30-40 tables, maybe more of coins and about 10-15 tables for stamps. Most dealers are really willing to help you and only a few are really out to get you, but you can usually tell who's who though. DON'T give up on shows, they are a great experience to see some great coins.
