1964 PR69DCAM Dime Purchase

I purchased the above coin, when I received it the slab was in two parts (the label and Coin section) Both sections fit together perfectly but the envelope they came in showed no signs of the bubble wrap damaged. Could the force needed to split the coins have happened in shipment or was I sent a coin that had the slab damaged proir to purchase.

Yes, it could happen in shipment. If it was hit precisely right it could split along what is essentially a fault line in the slab - the demarcation point between the label portion and the coin portion. I've had one I shipped that did that.

I have had this happen when the item was run thru the automated mail sorting machines. Broke in exactly the same place. In my case, the coin was not damaged, and a trip to PCGS for reholdering did the trick. Bad news is that even though the reholdering was only $5, the shipping both ways was something like $25. So I waited until I made another shipment to them to save a bit on outbound shipping.

Your slab broke in the weak spot. Send it to PCGS to be reholdered.

I received this coin, which came packaged in a padded envelope.

  • First time this happened to me, but mine looks just like the above penny. I will include this in with a submission later. Will this coin have to be listed on a separate submission form with the insurance/shipping calculation applied.
