A 1850 Switzerland proof set

imageimageimage

A spectacular group of Chinese dollars, the first two are fantasy dollars celebratng a wedding couple from the 19th century alluded to in an earlier post . The last coin is a gold dollar celebrating the inaugration of Yuan Shikai in 1916 as per Sumnon. Almost all large Chinese gold coins before 1949 are excessively rare.

  • Love those Chinese.
Since you're rareCanadian, I bought a 1911-C Sovereign PCGS MS64 and had to pay $351 plus 15% juice. Did I pay too much ?
I'd rather be lucky than good.

These are fantastic. Thank you for sharing them with us. These are coins that I probably will never get to see in person.

The first two Chinese gold pieces are dated 1885. I do not know who the couple is but surely it must have have involved the imperial clan. The reverse of both of the wedding medals shows the word "happiness" over and over running around the rim.

The third Chinese gold peice is not a Puyi wedding medal but a commemorative issue marking the enthronement of Yuan Shikai as emperor, dated 1916.

I would say yes. Catalogue is $450 Canadian in 64 or approx $315 US.

BTW, I like that Swiss set!

This Swiss set is very impressive. Is it in its orginal case?
  • Sumnon,
Thank you for the very interesting info and translations on the coins, we may have got the 1916 coin confused with another coin we saw in a referance book..
    Best,
