Won this 1953 Proof Set today

The case is stained, as so many are, the photo are blurry, but the coins look nicely toned and at a Spinks value of £85 I think I did OK. NEN offered me one for $150 at the ANA in Pittsburgh.

The coins look like beauts!! What caused the staining -- the red lining or some sort of mold that fed on it?

Cool set. One of these days I'm going to have to get one. I settled for a proof 1953 Southern Rhodesian crown today.

Hey Don, since I know you don't like toning, i'll trade you out a nice bright 1/2d for that toned one in that set.

Mark, I don't know what causes that staining but I have seen in on quite a few 1953 Proof Sets and it is mainly on the 1953 sets, not on the '50 and '51 that I've noticed.

I'd have chalked it up to the lining, but some of the stains occur in places that lie directly over coins.

What's the red liner made of -- felt? Maybe small tufts got loose and scattered. Only the largest coin in that new pic seems to have blocked them.
