Does this 1916-D Dime look real?

Found this coin today. Not sure if the mint mark looks right. Does this coin look real?

the dime is real.

the mm, however, is very definitely fake.

once you know what a 1916-d mm is supposed to look like, there's really no reason you should ever get duped by an added mm.

I was bidding on 2 slabbed ones recently, one in ANACS NET FR02 and another was VG-10, (can't remember whose slab), and the MM on both looked nothing like the pic you just showed. I'd say stay away.

Appears to be an added MM. The style is wrong.

Okay, we definitely know the d is added, but who can tell what coin that "D" originally came from? or was it created??

Well, it doesn't appear to be a modified 'S' mintmark. The 'S' is usually snuggled up closer to the the slight bend in the olive branch.



Note the distance from the rim. The 'S' is located further 'inboard' than the fake 'D' or even a real 'D' for that matter.
