I have just started a US Type Set, thanks to Masscrew's 9-8-2004 post on the his Type Set.

On 9-8-2004 Masscrew posted a thread about his US Type Set. He posted pics of his set. His post (and other recent prior posts on the same topic) caused me to take the plunge yesterday. I bought a Dansco Type Set album yesterday (lacking only the page for US Gold). Yesterday afternoon and evening I started to fill holes in the album with singles I have accumulated.

What a blast Looking through various singles and picking out specific coins to place in the album. I decided to go for a variety of looks (Mint State coins, Proof coins, DMPL coin, CAM/DCAM Proof and SMS coins, Circulated coins (G-4 to AU 58), toned coins, blast white coins. 76 holes total, 41 filled, 35 to go. The list of coins (with my comments about selected coins):

1847 Coronet Large Cent - F-12

1857 Flying Eagle Cent - VG-8

1862 Indian Head Cent - VG-8

1908-S - Indian Head Cent - VF-30

1909 VDB Lincoln Cent - MS-63 BN

1955-D Lincoln Cent - MS-63 RD (with a streak of rainbow toning extending from 11:00 to 4:00 across the obverse)

1943-P Lincoln Cent - MS-65/66

1967 Lincoln Cent - AU-55 (I found this coin in circulation years ago, I call it "Smoke On The Water" after the rock group Deep Purple. It is toned with beautiful deep purple color on both sides with the building on the reverse being toned black. AT or NT? I have no idea and do not care since it cost a penny and has great eye appeal)

1865 Two Cent - G-4

1868 nickel Three Cent - P-2

1867 Liberty Seated Half Dime - VF-20 (nice original color, rare date with low mintage, however the coin has a small hole in it since some idiot in the past decided it would make a piece of jewelry; without the hole it would be a very nice piece)

1866 Shield Nickel with rays - P-2

1883 Liberty Head Nickel, no cents - MS -63

1938 D Buffalo Nickel - MS64/65 (nice golden toning)

1962 P Jefferson Nickel - PF 67 CAM/DCAM

1943 D Silver Jefferson Nickel - MS 64/65FS (blast white when I obtained it as an 8 year old kid, placed into a Whitman holder and after 3-4 decades, it now has lovely rainbow toning on both sides)

1914 P Barber Dime - F-12

1918 P Mecury Dime - F-12

1964 P Roosevelt Dime - MS 63 (blast white when I obtained it from circulation in 1964, placed into a Whitman holder and after 3-4 decades it now has mottled purple toning on both sides)

1967 Roosevelt Dime - MS-65 SMS CAM (obtained from a 1967 SMS set and it has light golden toning on both sides)

1877 CC Liberty Seated Quarter - VG 6/8

1917 Standing Liberty Quarter, Type 1 - F-12

1924 S Standing Liberty Quarter - AU55-MS63 (depending on whether there is rub on Lady Liberty's right knee)

1935 P Washington Quarter - MS -63/64 (blast white)

1967 Washington Quarter - MS 67 SMS, possibly CAM (obtained from a 1967 SMS set and it has deep golden toning on both sides)

1830 Large O Capped Bust Half Dollar - EF 45 (with original light brown toning on the obverse and multi colored toning on the reverse)

1915 S Barber Half - F-12

1933 S Walking Liberty Half - AU55-MS63 (depending on whether there is rub on Lady Liberty's left leg, arm, hand and on her skirt; also toned a light golden color)

1956 Franklin Half - PF-68 DCAM

1964 Kennedy Half - PF68 CAM (DCAM obverse, CAM reverse)

1971 D Kennedy Half - MS-63/64 (pulled from circulation in 1971 and placed into a Whitman holder; after 3 decades it has toned on both sides a nice light blue/steel grey color)

1880 S Morgan Dollar - MS63 DMPL (picked up in a local shop yesterday along with the Dansco Album)

1922 P Peace Dollar - EF45 (picked up at a jewelry store/pawn shop last month; it has attractive grey/brown toning on both sides and under a loupe shows whisps of rainbow toning at various locations on the coin)

1972 S Silver IKE - MS 64/65 (from a blue pack IKE given to me years ago by my dad; the coin has more of a semi proof like appearance instead of a more granular/satin appearance)

1776-1976 D Bicentennial Quarter - AU55/58 (pulled from circulation in 1975/76; has nice grey toning)

1776-1976 P Bicentennial Half - AU55/58 (pulled from circulation in 1975/76; has nice light brown toning)

1776-1976 D Ike Dollar - AU55/58 (pulled from circulation in 1975/76; has nice light brown toning)

1979 D SBA Dollar - MS63 (pulled from original roll; nice light brown toning)

2000 P Sacagawea Dollar - MS 63 (obtained from U.S. Postal Service stamp vending machine)

2003 D Maine, Statehood Quarter - AU58 (obtained from circulation)

1986 Silver American Eagle Dollar - MS65/66 (purchased in 1986, has developed light golded around portions of the upper half perimeter on the obverse and the lowed half perimeter on the reverse)

I know this post is lengthy but I simply could not resist describing the coins now sitting in my Dansco U.S. Type Set Album. Again this has been fun and I will now be looking to fill more holes and to upgrade some of the coins sitting in the album.

Any comments from other forum members who have put/are putting together a Type Set would be appreciated. SanctionII.

Sorry, can not provide pics. I have no digital camera or scanner. Hoping to acquire a digital camera in the future (Xmas maybe), tinker with same and begin to post pics. When and if I acquire a camera I will post pics of my new Type Set.

  • That's a great start. It's always nice to have a story behind some of the coins. I see you've left plenty of room for upgrades on several of them if you get to that point.

If you send me $10 I will send you a digital camera that will tide you over till you get a better one. It's digital and free (other than the shipping).

I just started the same Type set about a month ago.

I am not using any of my existing coins in this set. I have been carefully selecting VF to MS coins only from the Philadelphia mint to put in it. I'm off to a fairly good start. I have 37 coins thus far.
I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....

SanctionII, your type set looks remarkably like mine! I just recently bought a Dansco #7070 and went ahead and filled in some similar coins that I had. I think I have 33 holes left.

I think my first areas of concentration will be some of the seated coins and half dollars. And I am very much looking forward to the continued "hunting".

P.S. - go Broncos!! (against the Chiefs)

    Further update.

Just went to the bank on my way back I stopped by the local coin shop wanting to show my Dansco Album to the dealer I bought it from yesterday. He was not in, but his son was. They had just gotten in a 1914-S Barber half which the shop owner graded AU-55. Looks alot better than a prior 1914-S (graded EF-45) I saw last week that I thought about buying. The AU-55 looks very nice, but I do not have the cash to pay the asking price ($275.00), thus I did not even think seriously about picking it up (though it would look very good in the Type Set).

The last page of the Type Set has a hole for a 1983-Date Commem. Could not stand that it was empty. Looked in the display case and decided to pick up a 1987 Constitution Commen, DCAM Proof. It is now sitting in my Dansco Type Set Album. The count is now 42 holes filled, 34 to go.

eyoung 429, thanks for the offer, but I'll pass at this time.

crackout, yeah, go Broncs (I am a Bronco fan, though I am not as die hard as I was before they finally won a Superbowl).
  • Can't resist posting some pics...I'm a type set fanatic. My pics are in Baley's thread, page 5.

Congrats on the start of a fun album. And, my apologies because you may, like me, not wish to work on anything else as these are very addicting...image

True, but when I got down to "three holes left" I had to take a break. The coins needed to fill those holes are kinda pricey !!!

I hear it; right now I'm saving up for a Draped Bust Large Cent in XF $$$.$$ It's got to be close to one of the most expensive, and the hardest to find nice.
