Which Heritage WCA lot went furthest out of the park?

I know I already mentioned this in another thread, but I'm amazed at some of the hammer prices at the Long Beach Heritage World Coin Auction.

One coin I bid on went for three times the high estimate!

Check it out!

Lot #12332: British Honduras, George V 25 Cents 1919, KM17, lustrous Unc. (est. $200 to $250) sold for $862.75

I didn't even bid on the 1913 Cyprus 9 piastres in AU because I figured it would go through the roof, also, but it closed within the low end of the estimate. image Syracusian, were you the high bidder?

Auction estimates on this type of thinly traded material are often way off. Sometimes the bad estimates are caused by the auctioneers relying on catalogs with valuations that don't even vaguely reflect reality. A friend of mine has been collecting world coins by type for 40 years. You would be amazed how many low catalog value coins he is still missing (he has well over 4000 types in his collection).
    All glory is fleeting.
  • That sounds like an impressive set! I'm not surprised, though. The set I'm putting together is only a tenth of the size (but I've only been working on it a tenth of the time) and there are some coins haven't seen offered yet. Others only in low grade. I've seen four of the one in my sig line and I errantly passed on the only high grade example.

Lots 12606 and 12607 sold for $28K and $26K respectively, not counting the 15%. Both went for about 250% of the estimates. Most of the scarce high end stuff went above estimates.

All of the Canadian tokens went 3 - 6 times estimate. But I think the estimates were kind of low on them to start. Most are rarely seen these days, so market values are hard to guestimate.

Shiroh, no. I didn't win a single lot, and I had placed bids on quite a few of them. image

I was mostly interested in the Victorian bronze lots from Cyprus, the majority of them unc to BU. All went for twice or more than their estimate and these estimates were above cat prices.

My biggest disapointment was this rare little beauty: Edward VII 1/4 piastre BU . I should have bid higher, for I don't know when the next one will come along, but ,being on holidays, I completely forgot about it. image
