Any info/pics on '64 Washington w/65 rev (ty 3?)

I'm looking for pics or information on 1964 Washington quarters with the reverse of 1965. It may be called type 3 reverse, I don't recall.

I'm pretty sure it is included in the Cherrypicker's Guide but alas...I do not own a copy yet. Any info would be appreciated!!!

  • I found the Breen #s. They are 4412 for the 64P and 4415 for the 64D. I'll keep digging. You might be able to find something using just those numbers, though.

Herbert Hicks refers to the '64-D variety three reverse as being very scarce. They were probably
made in 1965 when a 1965 reverse inadvertantly recieved a D mintmark and went into production
striking silver coins in Denver. He goes on to say that in a sample of some 280,000 coins only 23
of these were found. Considering the large numbers of '64 quarters melted in '68 and again in
'79/'80 it seems likely that not many of these remain.

This reverse is very sharp on the soft silver and is characterized by the dividing line for the sixth tail
feather being much sharper than on the type one or two, an incuse X line on the arrow bundle between
the eagle's legs, center line of tail feathers in relief, wreath leaves being much sharper with noiticeably
cupped centers, and most importantly the pointed leaf tip extends to the right of the last tail feather.

    Tempus fugit.
