If you really wanted to learn you would....

own an extensive library and read it and

go to coins shows and make friends and look at lots of coins and

buy coins and study them.

But if you really want to get "an education" you should try to sell them.

  • Posting to this board is fun. We all learn now and then.

But this is not the best place to really learn about coins.

I'm appalled at the number of people who don't have numismatic libraries.

Did you know that there are about 170,000 items in the coin area of eBAy and 300 of them are in the publications department?

Must be some huge demand for those books.

I went to my coin dealer yesterday and we talked about counterfeits and grading to the gnat's behind and he told me that unless I'm looking at hundreds of coins, actually he used the word "piles" of coins every day, that I will not be expert at grading and should have no hopes of being expert. He said that knowing something about grading and counterfeits from all the reading I have done is like having enough knowledge to make a really noticable mistake. So I question all the reading and studying I do without the practical knowledge of being in the dealing circles and looking a loads of coins every week. Hummmm...I guess the reading is most practical for just entertaining yourself and learning to appreciate the quality or the varieties of the material that you do see and have. Maybe it helps with learning the lingo but according to my dealer, it has no practical use in terms of grading raw material or detecting anything other than an obvious counterfeit.

    Have fun!

    I couldn't agree more.

Whenever I've considered making a particular purchase I always consider my chances at recovering my money if I were to sell the coin in the future. Some poor buying decisions years ago have taught me this lesson.

I actually volunteered (i.e., for no pay whatsoever) to work with a local dealer, say, one Saturday a month, to give me the opportunity to learn more about coins and grading (and to view coins). He puts out a newsletter that is fairly popular and circulated nation-wide, and I even offered to edit or otherwise help produce that newsletter (again, for no pay other than to have the ability to view his coins and get some pointers on the market and grading). My requests were summarily rejected, however. To mhammerman's point, I think the best way to learn grading is to view as many coins as possible.

There are some collectors out there that are pretty good graders. I've really noticed it when someone collects a specific area and they quickly learn about the series. In no time they know it better than 90% of the dealers and can grade it better too.
