Who is responsible for a fingerprint on a slabbed coin?

Will PCGS on any other grading service slab a coin with a fingerprint? Is it not likely that the fingerprint might be the result of the grading service personnel in some aspect of the grading/slabbing process?

What type of coin are you talking about. I really doubt if PCGS would be responsible for a finger print on a coin minted in the 1800's. With Moderns a question could come up about a finger print on that stuff.

Early coins, print from a previous owner. Modern coins, print from owner or possibly a PCGS employee. Thats my guess.

  • PCGS has become infamous recently for sending back proof coins with fingerprints on them. I'd take it up with the big man in the Q & A forum.

All coins have the same chance of being mishandled while out of their holders being graded. It is very difficult to prove, however, that PCGS did it. There is one scenario that is pretty cut and dried. That's when an old (green label) holdered coin is sent in for regrade. If a print has not developed over the past few years and then a print develops after it has been regraded and reholdered, it had to have been PCGS. They are the only people to have had the opportunity to put a print on the coin.

I really wish PCGS would come up with a better way to grade and handle coins, which sometimes are national treasures.

If you are the person that had the coin graded, and you know the coin did have a print on it before you sent it in, call customer service. I had a 1976-S Silver quarter that was high grade. I had the coin graded and when it came back it had a big ol' fingerprint on it. They took the coin back, and did something (probably some sort of dipping) and returned the coin to me without a fingerprint. If you did not have it graded, they won't take care of the print, because it could have been on the coin before grading.

    Hope this helps.

  • Why would it be so unreasonable that they should have to wear the same type of cotton gloves that I have when I handle the coins in my raw coin collections!
