Should I neg this buyer for not bidding high enough?

I almost got double face value for this proof set. Actually I'm glad he beat the other guy out by a nickel

I think you got what it was worth. Funny thing is that shipping is more than double the cost of the set!

I remember selling some of these proof sets last year. Seemed like it wasn't even worth the trouble.

Jeez, are they really that cheap now? I just bought a couple of those from the local shop for $6 each. Of course, those sets had a couple of nice cameo coins in them. image

Why in the world would you want to NEG him? His max bid may have been much higher than the hammer price he paid.image

  • I think we need an option to neg the entire bidder community for not recognizing true value! Or maybe we need an option to neg eBay itself for letting the slime degrade the decent auctions....

You never know what his bid was. Can't neg him if he pays on time.

I recently sold a 67 SMS set for $10 (Bid of $16.50) with $4 shipping. I told buyer I'd buy the set back and give them $4 not to ship it. They said they wanted it and then said I gipped them on postage (I sent it uninsured as I was losing on the deal anyway and took the chance). I then reminded them of my offer and told them that even with my published outrageous $4 shipping charge the set was still less than bid by a long shot.

I'm done with cheap coins on e-bay. They are not bringing the money.

I guess there are just too many proof sets to go around!

Giving stuff away, huh. Thats atleast two of us that enjoy give aways....image

    Neg Him !!
  • Nope. You ran a no reserve, no minimum auction knowing the risks. You can't fault the winning bidder for not bidding high enough. The honorable thing is to follow through, suck up the loss, and move on. Next time, set a minimum or a reserve.

Do you think Relayer has even a thought of giving this person a Neg for a puny bid ? Get real. Relayer is just having a little fun.

  • Part of the problem is that there are a lot of proof sets on eBay. We start the bidding for ours at 1/2 of Red Book value + $1 and we're getting it. We have a lot of loyal and repeat customers though. That might make the difference. I wouldn't take the chance of starting a proof or uncirculated set at .01 because the market is so flooded. Look on the bright side, the guy who bought this set might watch for more auctions from you and maybe he'll be a regular customer. Just don't keep putting stuff out there that could possibly sell for so little image

Man...that is my birth year....I will buy 100 sets (nice, no carbon, no bad coins) at that price per set.
    Any takers? image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

It's always amazed me they call it common sense, when surprisingly it’s not so common.

  • I am also just beginning to pick up on the sense of humor of some of the posters here as I have only been here a few weeks myself. Sorry for the negativity, relayer, but I was on the receiving end of a nasty email from a seller once who got caught by me sniping in the minimum ($1.00) bid on a coin that would normally go for a lot more if there was any interest. No feedbacks were exchanged, but since then I have felt that when a seller runs a no reserve, no minimum "true auction", they should be obligated to follow through even if a thousand dollar coin closes at 1c.

  • Particularly in the collecting world, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Just because a Guide tells you something is worth X amount doesn't mean people are going to pay that.

I understand the "humor" involved in this discussion, though see most people have taken it seriously, and given the sensible answers expected.

With Auctions, either the Bidder wins, or the seller wins. It all depends on who gets the most out of the sale.

I'll pay VERY good money if someone can give me an authentic *proof* set bearing my birth year. Even better if they can get me silver coins like all my older siblings got... image
