  • I don't want any of the Lincoln collectors to think I'd be "jumping ship", but I have been looking pretty hard at this series over the past few weeks.....

  • Jacktheknife-You could used to buy common 65's for $500-$600 & common 66's for $ 1250-$1400 a year ago- Now common PQ 65's are $850-$900 and common 66's are now $ $1600-$2000. For the rare dates 84-98 & 06-basically 12s you now have to pay $ 2000-$2500 for decent 65's ans a rare 66 will run $ 7500 and up.But where else can you get a pop 4-8 66 for under 10k?????image

  • Yes, Son of a gunk gets a big time thumbs up from me.

As for the prices on liberty nickels, they are much more reasonable than Lincolns. Look at Legend's pop 1 1899. No way could you buy a pop 1 early Lincoln nowadays for 15-17K. If I had the same amount of money in Liberty nickels that I have in my Lincolns, I'd have a killer set.

Thank you for the kudos. It is true that both upgrades were through the PCGS regrade program. It is a great feeling to get a coin in a better holder that you knew really belonged there. Yes, this is a great series. In my view the mint state pieces are still very undervalued when lookng at the price/pop comparison. The design is really nice in my opinion, and there is a lot to look for in strike and toning features. Quality remains variable for the grade (as in any series). Especially at the 66 level, make sure you are really getting a nice coin. Check the left reverse corn. Except for some of the 20th century dates it should show significant detail. And check the obverse stars for fullness. Finally watch out for carbon spots. Most have one or two somewhere, but watch our for those that have many spots. Check out the Liberty Nickel Collector Society set. It is linked to a great website on Lib Nickels that the collector maintains. Well worth looking at if you ae considering this series.

  • If I do decide to jump in, can someone recommend a couple dealers with concentrations of Liberty Nickels that I could check out?

    Thanks,

    Jack
  • Jack-Why don't you email " Baxi", "Typetone" & " Friend " on the PCGS registry.I believe those three are long time collectors who specialize in the series.I met " Baxi "- his real name is Phil, something or another at the FUN show this year and he seemed to know boatloads about this series and what dealers to trust. I have bought a few of his 2nd set and they were real PQ in my opinion.

Jack, say it ant so. I'll tell you what. If you'll stay exclusively with Lincolns, I wont add another Lincoln to my registry for at least two months. image

  • David,

I'd love nothing more than to stay exclusively with Lincolns. I'm just a Lincoln freak. The problem is that I can't buy them anymore. I looked at two coins in the last signature auction, the 11-S in 66RD and the 14-P in 67RD. They went for $20,000 and $40,000+, respectively. Too many whales in that pool, there is no room left. So, I looked around for another pool with more room to swim around in. The Liberty Nickel pool looks nice. They better watch out, because I usually enter a pool with a cannon ball off the diving board!!!

Some good dealers that I have bought Liberty Nickels from include Pinnacle Rarities (starting at 65/66 level), Legend (starting at the 65/66 level), Rare Coins of New Hampshire, DLRC, and P&M (if they are still around). Many are traded through the Heritage, Superior, and other auctions. I'm not sure of the best source for grades of 64 and under. You might the Lib Nickel Collector Society guy. Also email the major collectors. I don't have any to sell now, but I offer them from time to time on the board. Try Dale Friend, and Baxi. Wondercoin might even have some to sell.

    Cheers

I hear you. I jumped ship a couple of months ago, as you know. I just bought what is a personal record for me for my most expencive coin, and it isnt a Lincoln. Now I've got to sell the bulk of the Lincolns I have left over so I can cash it out of lay-a-way. Fun.

I'll be looking for a AU58, MS63, or MS64 1885 nickel for my type collection. If you happen to run across one, please let me know.
