  • That should never happen to a silver trime, IMO. PCI should have never given that coin an AU55, no matter what the details look like.

    they didn't. they gave it a "au-55 holed coin" grade. to think a single "number" grade could be assigned to such a coin would be ludicrous.

    Ouch. A month or two ago I was in a shop near here and the guy had a 1916(P) merc in 65 with full split bands -- and a hole. He wanted $1. I passed. It was a great coin for a buck, but I just couldn't stand taking on a coin with severe problems after weeding out so many from the collection I built as a kid.

    All I can say about that coin, and others like it, is -- it sucks. Too bad.

    Perhaps some charm for a chain given to a young lady a nearly 150 years ago?
