Tax tokens

Does anyone know anything about tax tokens issued during the Depression (I think)? Does anyone collect them and if so, where do you find them? I am a tax lawyer and it might be interesting to have a "fun" collection of these, in addition to what I normally collect. Any thoughts?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I have a few hundred although I can't say I seriously collect these. I have an out of print book by Jerry F. Schimmel, called U.S State-Issued Sales Tax Tokens. It lists prices but this 2nd Ed is from 1980. They are made from brass, aluminum, copper, zinc, plastic and cardboard/fiberboard. Kranky's link gives a good history of them. I have found most of mine at flea markets and some on eBay. If you would like a few, just PM me and I'll be glad to send you some. I believe there is token society that specializes in tax tokens but can't recall the name.

These were issued by several states and some counties. Most are fairly easy
to find but there are some which are quite difficult in unc and in nice condition.
There are also large numbers of varieties. Many people who collect these also
    collect ration coupons from WWII.

The Americam Tax Token Society has quite reasonable dues and is valuable in
helping people find the elusive issues.

  • Interesting. My son's friend who came over this past weekend with his box of coins for me to look at had a Washington State sales tax token. It looked almost new and was made from aluminum. I discounted it as anything of note due to ignorance I guess. I'll have to tell him to keep it and see what it is all about.
