Security for Dealer cases

I thought I might pass out some info for some of the dealers who are concerned about thier suitcases "walking away" during a show. I heard that it did happen recently. I have investigated a number of security devices for our company laptops and one of the products we will be using, Defcon by Targus Defcon woulds work real well and only costs about 50 bucks. basically its a motion detector and would sound if the bag is moved (unless you have the combination). Everyone would hear it before they got to the door.

With all the moving of cases all over a show looking for where something is, I think it would end up being a security nightmare. If it's for the back table.

Don't think it would be the right solution for a coin show.

  • For those that don't want a motion-sensitive alarm, you could use a cable
lock of some kind, looped through the handle and table leg. You could still
open the case, it just won't grow legs.

Sounds like after enough people have this device it would be like a car alarm - mostly an annoying gadget that everyone ignores, or tries to.

The alarm has to be annoy only 1 person, the thief!
I don't think security would ignore the alarm, if it annoys some of the floor so be it.
Solid, it sounds like it has a cable like you are describing, plus if the cable is cut the alarm sounds, something a regular cable doews not do.......
Great idea for dealers.....maybe even for collectors that bring suitcases to shows!

I would think that the motion detector would keep going off...which could be quite a pain

That's what I thought--get a locking briefcase and use a laptop cable--those things sound an alarm when cut, and only you know the combo.

  • There are also proximity alarms that would be useful. They go off if they are seperated by too much distance. Have the transmitter on the backup table and if the briefcase gets more than 15 feet away from the table the alarm goes off. That way just bumping or moving the case won't set it off, but if someone picks it up and trys to walk off with it he won't get far before the case starts sounding an alarm. If the dealer wants to take the case with him to vsit another table he just shuts it off.
