A question for the vam experts

I have a 1879-O which looks like vam 4 O/O. Does that sound right baised on the pics?

If that looks correct is there a price bump for this vam and do you think it would be worth sending it to ANACS; the coin should grade AU55.

It sure looks like a vam 4 to me, but I'm no expert. According to Ebay's history on the coin, it looks like it's probably worth somewhere around $40 in AU. It might not be a bad one to hang onto.

That is definately an O/horizontal O... most likely VAM 4.

Since there's not a Grey Sheet for VAMs it's tough to say what they're worth, but in my opinion an AU50 is in the $75-$100 range. An AU55 would be more.

Thanks Agflyer and DennisH. I thought it was but wanted to check and see if I was seeing things or not:crazy. Not worth slabbing I guess but a fun find anyway.

Definetly Top 100!

Check the Obverse, it's either VAM-4 or VAM-28.

Thanks for the link Jack. This looks like the vam 28 in the link except no die crack in the date, but the date is doubled.

Significant premiums on 1879-O VAM 4. According to the latest Top 100 Value guide an AU-58 is $125, almost 4x greater than a common 79-O.

Hi Chris,

Michael Fey publishes a quarterly newsletter with the latest VAM news (Rob Joyce, member here, had a feature article recently). Fey also publishes a price guide for the Top 100. I've been a subscriber for a year and will renew my subscription soon. I recommend it, but I would be careful with the price guide. The premiums for VAM's can be staggering, IMO. I'm sure the price guide is accurate, but the VAM market is a little to risky for me. However I enjoy watching the market and learning about new VAM discoveries.

The subscription price is $19.95 per year, payable to RCI, P.O. Box 9157, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.

Also just recently joined SSDC. Let me know if you'd like details on them.
