question on the player master set registries

where does the checklist for the player master set come from? beckett? scd? or does psa maintain it's own list of what they regard as compelte?

as a player collector myself, i have quite a few items i've never seen catalogued anywhere. how would these figure in to the registry?

Comments

  • Typically the player master sets contain any card PSA has graded of that player. As an example, there are many cards of Jim Palmer which are not in the registry set. However, when I come across one and get it graded, I request that it be added to the set. If you have something that isn't cataloged, you first need to convince PSA to grade it, then it can be added to the set.

What rbeaton said. There are literally dozens of cards, coins, inserts and other oddball items that are not in the master set of a popular player with a long career (Nolan Ryan, Mike Schmidt). They can be added to the set after PSA has graded an example.

I expect the 122-item Johnny Bench master set, for example, to grow by at least 10 items once the annual October beauty pageant has passed ... and a few of them will be my fault.

Note that the collectible had to be issued during the player's active career. A good thing, too, considering all the inserts that are STILL being made for long-retired stars!

  • yeah, so many new cards coming out its ridiculous!

it's important to note that PSA is taking literally months to get new cards added to master sets. They say 10 weeks, but it's often more. From what i understand, they're buried in work.

    Hi,

I have two questions for everyone here regarding player sets. I have started both Marino master and basic sets on the registry and have the following questions:

    1. Will cards such as cut outs from box bottoms be graded by PSA? If they are graded as "Authentic" can they be added to the registry...or does a grade have to be issued?

    2. While I understand that the basic registry set should only include regular issue cards from the players's "playing days", shouldn't the master set include cards from post retirement? I have asked to have cards added to the Marino master set from 2001 through 2004 - which I have seen comments on the board that the master sets should only include cards up to retirement.

    Any comments would be appreciated!!

    Regards,

Yes, hand-cut cards such as Hostess are gradeed, they jusrt have to fit into a PSA holder. Once graded, they can be included in a master set. As someone mentioned, it can take a long time. I am not sure about authentic. Even if they could be included, the grade would be treated as zero.

No, only cards (and other gradable items) from the player's active career. Otherwise, Nolan Ryan's master set would have thousands of items. Ruth, Cobb, Mantle ... inserts and re-issues are still being printed. Besides, there's not much challenge in buying a 2004 insert of a dead or retired player for 25 cents, and the sets should remain somewhat challenging. Maybe if they had separate sets, vintage and modern. I wouldn't want to see some glossy chrome refractor 2004 card of the Babe included in his registry set along with 1933 Goudey!

yep.. but as always, i gotta give major credit to Cosetta, Gayle and the rest! I used to get pissed that it would take so long, but then I got an email from Cosetta at like, 3am her time.. lol.. anybody putting in those hours is worthy of praise..

btw - i think we usually have a monthly "Praise Cosetta" thread, dont we?

If not - we should start one!! She has been great once again....I just dealt with her on several set additions. The only thing I'm peeved about are these people on the boards happy because their submission was graded in 4 days. I've had two in at PSA - one received Aug. 18th and the other Aug. 25th. I had no expectations of them being graded early until I saw the threads......(grumble...).

While I somewhat agree with you, I don't feel the Marino master set would be complete without his most recent cards. Maybe there could be a master set and an "ultimate master set". The latter would be impossible because of the reasons you quoted plus the fact that many new Marino issues are numbered out of 1, 5, 10, 13, ect.... which would make them either impossible to find or ridiculously expensive to complete. I'd rather spend $1000 on a Namath rookie than a Dan Marino auto'd jersey, ball, jockstrap numbered to 5!!!

Greg, I understand wanting to have a Marino set that is as complete as possible, and certainly a collector can accumulate as many post-retirement "nostalgia" cards and inserts as they please for their own satisfaction.

But let's use my favorite player as an example. Each year for many years, including this one, the various card makers include an array of Johnny Bench inserts, some of them special auto or GU cards, but many just "nostalgia" cards that some modern collectors regard as "filler" and either box up with the commons or sell for a few cents. This has been going on for quite awhile. Should the Bench Master Set increase by 12-16 cards every year just for the endless stream of inserts and their variations? I hope to God not. And Johnny is far from the most popular player as far as these inserts go.

I do have quite a few of these inserts (autos and GU jerseys/bats and the like) for my personal pleasure. But I'd hate to HAVE to acquire them all if I ever want to complete the registry set. There are already plenty of oddball cards, coins, and other collectibles from his playing career that are as yet ungraded or not yet submitted for inclusion.

With these dozens and hundreds of modern inserts added, the registry's vintage collectors would see their completion % shrink considerably every year, even while acquiring the original vintage cards as fast as they can.

I'm with you on the nostalgia cards. There are at least 50 different Alan Trammell cards issued every year, and he's been retired since 96. I can only imagine how many Nolan Ryan or Cal Ripken cards are released every year. Confining master sets to the playing years, and possibly the year after retirement for complete statistics is the only reasonable way to do it.
