My latest addition to my type set...

I'm going for keys only. I'll run out of money long before I'll run out of needed dates, but I'm trying to knock out some tuffies (well... tuffies at my level of collecting) early. This is a PCGS F15 example.

  • I agree! Nice Merc! image
  • LCM that is a sweet looking coin ! I've decided that I love to look at all "types" of coins not just my proof coins. So I"m off to get nice "type" coins to look at.image

  • Hey!! You are Lincolncentman, not Mercurydimeman. You can't have Mercury dimes. Put the dime down and step away slowly!!!

That will be one expensive type set. I'm going for first year issues. Seems others had the same idea. A lot of first year coinage had ample mintage numbers but, just aren't very available. Some issues will be unobtainable. image

  • Sweet Merc!! It has that circulated, but not too worn look. Beautiful coin!! I'm sure that'll be one type set to drool over once it's done.

Collecting a type set with key dates is the ultimate in coin collecting imo.
I like the original color and glosseyness of your 16d.image

Thanks guys. This is the third "tuffy" addition to my set. I'll have to sell some more of my Lincoln set before I can get something else. This one stretched me to the max. Here's the other two "biggies" in my set.

I have a few easy "key" date types too. A MS67 1943-S cent and MS65 1939-D nickel come to mind. For some reason, I have plenty of better date non-vdb lincolns to chose from. I have it narrowed down to two, either the 31-S in 65RD or the 54-P in 66RD. I'm thinking of going for the more traditional better date on that one... the 31-S.

I can't be the first person to think of this either, but why not go for second-year issues instead? I bet you could complete most of the 20th century with just the money you save buying a 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter instead of a 1916.

  • I'm doing a raw type set in a Dansco 7070 Album.

My goal is to do first or second year coins for each spot or transition.
So far so good but i'm sure there are plenty of stumbling blocks ahead.
  • Nice pick up David!!

I'm doing a raw type set in a Dansco 7070 Album.

That's awesome. I bought one of those too. I thought about putting all mid-grade key dates in it, F-AU, then taking it to a show away from my area to ask a few dealers if they were interested in this coin collection left to me (by me of coarse.) Then I thought that I'd rather just leave them in the holders.

Then I thought about putting some nicer grade stuff in there, but that runs into money on it's own right. So then I thought about doing a "worst known" raw set. The only problem there is I like to see some details. Then I thought about just a average G and better set, then I thought... nah.

So now I have a danso here with a few random type coins from my early days of collecting.

BTW you should do a 14-S or D not the 31-S.
I actually have a pretty nice 14-S in PCGS 65BN right now. I have an exception (undergrade IMHO) 31-S in 65RD. It comes down to eye appeal on that one.
