Based on all the recent sales of the 1796-97 halves, I think both the consignor and auction house are disappointed with the $48,750 result for this very nice cleaned coin.
Maybe we are relying a bit too much on the certification of coins when it comes to early bust coinage. It appears this coin was sold raw, and not in a typical ANACS slab with the reservations required for a cleaned coin.
But I doubt very seriously there are many coins of this generation that were not touched up over time. I have viewed 10 or more XF to AU halves of these dates, all certified by PCGS or NGC, and all but 2 are medium to dark grey, without luster, that would indicate an old cleaning. Several XF 40's have sold for $70,000 plus in the last year. This coin should be on a par with any of those.

Perhaps it's just the cleaning, but I'm not comfortable, especially for $48k
