OT: Can I ask a Paypal question?

This is a little off topic, but I will try anyway. I am new to the whole Ebay thing (I just sold my first item last week). Today I set up a Paypal account and I linked it to my bank account. I got an email from Paypay saying that they will make two very small deposits into my account in the next 2 days "to make sure the bank account and the link is working". Is this normal? I signed up through the Paypal website, so I think it's legit, but please let me know for sure. Thanks!!

  • Longacre, This is normal. Paypal makes sure the bank information you gave is correct.

  • If you are going to be doing more selling with paypal be sure to read up on their rules. Make sure you only ship to the buyer's confirmed address.

If someone asks you to ship elsewhere, say no. If you ship to an address other than the confirmed address and they say they never got it, even if you can show the emails paypal doesn't care.

You must be able to PROVE you shipped to the confirmed address or paypal will pull the money from you account. This can happen many weeks later. There are other issues with paypal too. Be sure to do a google search for chat regarding paypal to get the info you need to use it safely.

    Happy selling.

I suggest you set up a new bank account exclusively for Paypal, for added security. As soon as Paypal money hits my account, I electronically transfer it out to my main account, leaving a balance of about a dollar.

I believe the two deposits will make a four digit number that PayPal will ask you to input, somthing like two deposits the first being 12¢ and the next being 34¢ and they would want you to put in 1234 to confirm the bank account is yours - as only the account owner could access the statement. They don't want you linking to, say, my bank account if you got the account number and then making a bunch of crazy eBay purchases.

The process makes your account what is known as "Verified", a term you've likely seen.

This is a very, very good idea.
