When you see a coin like this, even though you know it is a rarity, and you want it for your type set...buying the holder and not the coin is the only way to go....because the coin is just an ugly hunk of copper at this point.

I copied those pics into MGI Photosuite and brightened them to see any detail.

There wasn't much to see, of course, but there was a ghost of some wreath on the reverse.

Having seen the coin, I will say that in my opinion, the coin would not cross to NGC or PCGS plastic. Pat Braddick has also seen this coin if you'd like his opinion. My 2 cents......

I agree, it would not cross. PCGS, although somewhat forgiving of older copper planchets, would see this one as having too many issues. Bust copper certainly doesn't need to have hard, smooth surfaces for consideration, but this one shares what appears to be corrosion and/or a porous appeal that is distracting enough to prohibit a cross IMHO.

  • I would not pay that amount of money for a coin that I want, if I can't even tell that its that coin.

  • I wouldn't buy it either, but that photo is not helping at all. You can acutally see some detail if you brighten it up.

That was the only year the lib. cap. 1/2 cent was made with liberty facing left.

  • I wouldn't pay that much for it either. I just knew we had some 01 collectors so I thought I'd mention it. If I couldn't afford at least an 08, I'd cross it off my want list.

Dunno. Crack it out of the holder and pry the two halves apart.

  • Look in the listing and it says that this is the only year they used a planchet of this thickness. In the absence of a date, graders look for any distinguishing characteristic such as the above to date the coin. If it has none, then it comes back in a BB as not gradeable.

This coin was also a ANACS PO01 when I bought and it crossed to PCGS as a FR02 (upgrade). No comparison.........

  • In 1997, I passed on paying $125 for a Poor 1793 Half Cent. I regret it now! Someday, less than $1000 may be considered a huge
bargain for ANY first-year US Mint coin. (Playing Devil's advocate here-- and no, I'm not the seller).

Over priced, but I bet it will cross...

I paid $280 for mine on Teletrade.

    Teletrade Description:
Dark brown toning, heavy wear, pitted surfaces, rev is flat, outline of obv devices can be seen.

The coin has slightly granular surfaces, but not bad. I really love my Half Cent!

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
  • This coin reminds me of the colonial that was worth $15K. Much higher grade ofcourse.
