Think this 34D NGC 66 Merc can go FB?

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am not sure if I asked this before, if so, sorry. I'm not sure when NGC started to label FB's on Merc's. This coin looks close. Does anyone know if this NGC slab was before FB days and any opinions if this could go FB? The price difference between the 2 is huge.

I think if I remember Conder101's thread this was slabed between 1997 and 2001. Based on the first pic I would have said no but the close-up looks like it would. Worth the try I'd say.

Send it in. You have more to gain than to lose.

It's borderline. Looks like a bit of a bridge there. But as the other person said, you have more to gain than lose by sending it in for a designation review.

I think this one just misses the designation and will not go FB with PCGs...

Looks split from here - depends on the angle too - sometimes split bands just don't look split period from a certain angel and that'll kill it right there....worth a shot JR!

I would say that you have a 50/50 shot. Its a great coin anyway , 90% FSB in my opinion.
  • I'm pretty sure they labeled FB from the beginning, PCGS certainly did, I've seen plenty of Rattlers with FB designation... though, I guess it's possible that NGC didn't start designation it til later... really looks borderline to me, but really... I don't think the bands are rounded enough just left of center...

You need a better picture but on first glane I'd say no...

No, not that date, perhaps (30% at PCGS) if it were a common date.

I have a 34P that looks almost the same as your coin. PCGS said FB on it but I disagree with them. Who am I to say what FB is though.

As stated before if it was a common date its a shot coin. Seems how its a 34D its a long long shot coin. Worth a try IMO.

  • That tag looks pretty old. The coin looks damn close to FSB to me. I'd resubmit it.

Thanks for all the opinions. I believe I picked that coin up in the late 80's, maybe early 90's at the latest.
