Need grading advice

These are both Venezuelan issue cards, and as is quite common with the few of these that surface, many have stains from both dirt and glue. Most of the glue stains are usually on the backs, however, the Brock has a glue stain running across the left side of his face, as you can see in the scan. It's not overly terrible, but no doubt would warrant a ST qualifier. The Brock card itself, without the stain, would probably get a 7 or 8, especially if they are more forgiving on this particular issue because they are so rare, especially in nice shape. The question is, do I ask for no qualifier and hope they give me a 5, or see if I could get a 7 or 8 with the ST qualifier? PSA has graded one of these, it was a 6. Of the 74 cards they have graded from the 66 Venezuelan set, only a PSA 7 was qualified (and I don't know the qualifier, but would guess it was a stain). The majority (26) are 3-4. Only 1 PSA 8 out of all of them. That's the Brock...

...the Robinson is a different story. It has several dirt stains, somewhat advanced wear on the corners, and is off-center. I'd say the highest it would grade, even without the stains, would be a 5. I don't even know if they would stick a ST qualifier on a card graded lower than a 6.

Here's pictures, would I be better off asking for no qualifiers or take my chances with the ST qualifier?

  • Because these cards are hard to find and they are frequently damaged when found, I would recommend that you submit them straight and let PSA issue the qualifer. A Brock with corners that nice is far more rare than whatever grade it would get if you request no qualifiers.

I agree. There are cases where a qualified 7 or 8 is better than an unqualified 5 or 6, and the Brock looks like one of them. The Robinson, though, looks like it would get a 4 or 5, so it wouldn't matter as much.

  • Can someone give a brief synopsis of these Venezulan cards? What are they? How do you know they are Venezulan? I looked at the back of those cards and didn't see anything that gave them away. I know nothing about them but I'm really curious. Thanks.

They were issued by Topps in Venezuela. Some years have Spanish printing on the reverse, other completely different colors and/or layout on the reverse. On the 66 cards, they can be identified as Venezuelan mainly by their back, as it appears a much brighter shade of pink that the US issue. The cards also have little to no surface gloss on the front, and are printed on thinner card stock. There are not many of them in existance, at least, not known to be in existance. Topps issued them in 1959, 60, 62, 64, 66, 67 & 68. They are not the same set size as the regular Topps issue.
