Questions on Mexican Coins

I went to a local show this weekend and became enamoured with the Mexican Cap & Rays 8 Reales and Un Peso coins (I picked up 5 total from different years and mints). I've spent several hours over the last few days researching all I could find about these on the web.

What I'm looking for is two things:

1. Internet dealers in classic Mexican coins.
2. Information on these coins (internet, books, whatever).

I appreciate any info anyone has.

These coins are so cool!

  • To get Mexican coins, you can contact me! I have a 1762 8 Reales "pillar dollar" for sale, and my son has a few newer ones to offer.
The coin I have is in fine to very fine condition and has a small inscription in Urdu ÀäÏی. ÝÇÑÓی. ÔÊæ. ÚÑÈی. ÈäÇáی. That's just a sample, its not that long! The iscription is just a notation of weight, but shows world circulation, at least to the area of India, Pakistan, Afganistan, and back to the United States! In those days it was the most prized currency because of the grade of silver, and was the American dollar before the US made their own.

My favorite book is Standard Catalog of Mexican Coins, Paper Money, Stocks, Bonds and Medals. There is a lot of historical information and lists every coin made in Mexico from 1535. Unfortunatly it is out of print, but one shows up now and then. The author is Colin R. Bruce III and was published by Krause. The IBN # is 0873410602.

We've got about 20 or so Mexican coins online from 1700-1950 or so. We've got more that are not yet up if you are looking for particular dates/mints/denominations.

  • Oh no! My old flame, Mexican silver! I developed an obsession with Mexican silver coins several years ago and barely got out of it alive. Libertads, pesos, silver commems, you name it, I had to have it. I vaguely remember having a book around here someplace that had Canadian, United States and Mexican coins that I used as my reference at that time, but I buried it away when things started becoming too intense for me. Maybe someone is familiar with the book I am referring to??

  • Wow, more info!

sliderider, I got the book you referred to at my local bookstore. It has helped me attribute the 5 coins I bought. Good reference.

MaxCrimmon, lots of book on that "numismatic quicksand" list. Thanks.

I really hope I can keep an even keel on this. But I have enjoyed my research so far. I bought an e-book on Mexican history to read on my looong flight to Japan.
