I happened to walk by Stacks yesterday...

We spent the day in Manhattan yesterday and in our wanderings, we walked by Stacks. Even though I knew they were closed, I figured here's my chance to peek in the window at some nice coins. Peering through the bars, all I saw were books in the window image Which was worse - that or having to go in the umpteenth shoe store with my wife and kids?

  • Interesting thing about Stack's is that they typically have the most run of the mill stuff in the windows or in the display cases - some low rent raw Morgans and ho-hum mediocre grade, inexpensive US type. But they always seem to have a customer or two in there eye-balling the stuff or contemplating a relatively modest purchase.

They have some wild stuff in their auctions, but it never quite makes it to the retail operation. Except for lot viewing, which takes place in the store (as well as upstairs at the hotel) and which is a little like riding the Tokyo subway at rush hour.

I visited Stack's only once. (In 1991 while on a business trip to New York.) I received very indifferent treatment that still leaves a bad taste in my mouth to this day.

ditto - I never went back since and this was at least 20 years ago.
They cater to old money, and that's why you usually don't see the stuff post auction too. Most of the pieces get placed in cabinets or collections.

I've been to Stack's several times. Each time I was shown a great deal of customer service. I just think its how you present yourself. Granted they aren't the friendliest store, but they are more than willing to help out. I befriended one of their younger guys and we talked coins for almost an hour. I purchased a couple of moderately priced coins and he even threw in an old Wayte Raymond album for free.

I think John Burham is a pretty nice guy. Does he normally work in the store...I've never been there.
