alot more people have pocket pieces than I thought

while reading the posts, I see more and more people talk about theirs.

I dont carry one. Why do you? What kind? For how long have you been and will you continue to? How do you pick WHAT yours will be? Do you pull it out of your collection, or buy one for that purpose as not to "waste" money?

these might be dumb questions, but I'm really curious about that.....custom?

Mine is a coin from Chile that I found during my grandpa's funeral. I've kept it with me now for 7 years.

Problem coins make great pocket pieces. I've carried a 2001 Silver Eagle since Christmas 2001. I'd bought it for about $8 off an Amazon auction and it had a fingerprint on it. I've become rather fond of it and have no plans to stop carrying it.

Lately I've been thinking about getting a cleaned ANACS gold piece and cracking it out. It would have to be ANACS because it means authenticity and other services won't slab cleaned coins.

I use to carry a 78 Ike Dollar, had it wore almost slick when it got stolen. (lesson here, don't take your pocket piece out of your pocket) image

    I now carry a 1973 S Proof Ike.

I carry an 1849 Large Cent (US) 'cause it's from 100 years before I was born. I got it out of a batch of old copper I got from a guy, and this coin was in the worst condition of any in the lot.

I also have some holed coins on my keyring: 1853 large cent, 1806 half cent, 2000 Canadian nickel (I like the beaver image) and a 1000 year old Byzantine AE Follis. All were holed when I got 'em.

I carry two 2000-D Sac dollars, and have been doing so for 4 years. I originally carried one because I was interested in seeing how they wore. I lost it and so I went and got another new one from the bank to carry. Shortly thereafter I found the first one in the seat of my car, and so I carry them both. They're probably down to around a VF35 or EF40 or so now, but those deep and wide rims really protect the coin!

No special reason. I just think it would be cool to have a gold pocket piece. I started a thread on it a couple weeks ago.

I carry an 1880S morgan cleaned and polished AU. I have carried it for about a month. I am trying to see how fast it will wear down (I think pretty slowly). Also want to see if I can get rid of the polishing and cleaning.

I bought this particular morgan in the early 80's for $18 (paid too much for it), but I thought it was cool then.

  • I carry an 1879 morgan as a pocket piece. I picked it up from my dealer's "Junk" morgan bin for $5 because it was cleaned and obviously AT'd. I figured I'd try to wear some of the cleaning off by carrying it as a pocket piece, and the toning rubbed off with everyday handling. I got it in AU58 and it's down to 53 now after 3 months. Great conversation piece!!

  • I carry a 79 Morgan also. I got it about 15 years ago and lost it when they were putting up cubicles where I worked then. About 8 years later they were moving them and I got it back. I thought then it would be good to continue carrying it.

I also have a love token on 61 seated Liberty Dime that is with my swiss army knife.

I don't carry a loose pocket piece 'cause I'd lose it. I do, however, put a few extra holeys on my keychain (there's a cool graffiti-ed and holed 1920 Merc dime on there right now.) Stuff that doesn't fit on my Holey Coin Vest often ends up on my keychain until I pass it on to someone else. (I stick with pre-1900 only for the vest and hat).

I've actually had this Merc on there longer than a lot of the previous coins- several months, in fact.

    1897 Morgan.
I bought it off ebay awhile ago, got it, didn't like how it looked (EF or so) and was mad at myself for buying it. So, it is now a pocket piece I use to show people a real silver dollar.
I've started carrying an Ike as well (since I got my last batch of 500 of them). I use some as tips but keep a certain one and don't spend it.

I use these as "lucky" pieces at the casino....always a conversation starter too image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Someone from across the street posted his a couple months ago. It was a SBA and he had it graded. I don't believe that it was graded higher than Fine. I wish I had been carrying a pocket piece for the past 10 years because I'd have it graded too. I realized I was missing out on a fun part of coins, so I stuck a 1982 Silver Washington 50 cent commen in my pocket.
