Can anyone give a history of NGC's grading; at what times was it tight or loose?

I've read several threads that give a timeline and the market perceived tighter/looser grading standards at some other TPG's like PCI. Some of these changes are linked to changes in slab design/color and happened as ownership changed hands. Has NGC gone through these phases also and if so what is the timeline?

Thanks for any info

I don't submit coins- only buy coins others have submitted, so I can't really answer your questions. But I am curious about buying the new NGC grading book, and comparing it with the latest PCGS grading book......

NGC was probably tighter than PCGS when they first opened their doors in 1987-1988. I recall sending them a few of my best coins and was surprised at how tough them graded them. I had a monstrously toned 1904 PF Barber half that I had paid $5200 for in 1986 (superb gem money). NGC graded this PF65 in early 1988.
I recall Ellesmere offering me less than PCGS money because "NGC was new" and they didn't have much of a track record yet. I sent the coin back within a year and it came back NGC PF66. I'm sure that coin today would either be a PF67 or PF68.

During the 1989-1990 market NGC and PCGS were roughly equivalent however it was common knowledge that each had their own preferences. Even then, darkish coins with clean surfaces went to NGC for higher grades. PCGS was tougher on large RED copper and also smaller coins like half dimes and 3 cent silvers. I must have upgraded at least a dozen Choice UNC PCGS 3 cent silvers. Unfortunately you don't find these much any more.

Thanks roadrunner; thats the kind of info I was looking for. The only TPG I had ever used was ANACS untill about two or three years ago so I have no real reference prior to that.
