Staple scratches - pretty common?

Hi, Everyone -

Will the services (PCGS, NGC, and ANACS) be forgiving of a small staple scratch? How large would a scratch have to be to preclude a grade from PCGS or NGC?

  • I dont know the exact answer, but I'd say it doesnt matter how the scratch got there. If it's scratched it's scratched and it'll be taken in to account at the grading table.

If I put a coin in the old holders that require staples (havnt done that in a while) I use needlenose plyers and flatten the staples to reduce the risk of scratches.

Large enough to render the coin Damaged. (in there opinion) They will not holder Damaged coins.
ANACS will holder it with a Net Grade and marked Damaged.

  • Dan, The grading services will slab a staple scratched coin if the scratch is not too distracting but you will lose a couple points.
