What would be a fair price for a 1912-S Liberty Head Nickel in Fine to XF these days?

I have been looking for 1912-S liberty nickels in the fine to XF grade lately and wondered what a good price would be for one? Most of the ones I see on dealer sites seem priced extremely high (ANACS F12 $350, PCGS F15 $450, PCGS VF20 $565, XF raw $1050). Ebay prices are lower, but most of the coins I see there are unslabbed and have problems. I have checked Teletrade and Heritage archives, but they don't have very many listed in these grades.

Also, could someone give me the greysheet prices for these grade ranges?

Thanks,
Charlie

    Charlie,

In my opinion the 12-s is actually a difficult date to find in the grade of XF. You see many in the lower grades up thru fine, and an ocassional vf, and then at the higher levels Higher AU's to low end MS.

I feel that a nice problem free PCGS correctly graded Xf 12-s is worth 700-800. There are overgraded V nicks out thier including many in the TPG's so look carefully.

Tag-along question: what might be a fair price for a 12-S in Fr-2? Such a coin was found hiding out in the remains of my childhood collection.

    Mirabela,

I am not sure on that one, I have never seen one in that low of grade. You see the 85 and 86's that low quite often, but not the 12-s.
You can find a decent 12-s in Good for about 80-100.00 and thier are plenty around so I am not sure thier would be much demand for a fr-2 12-s and if so, it would be in my guess about a 1/3 of good price possibly if that much. The 85 and 86 seem to have more demand in the lowest of low grades becuase of the steeper price climb as you come out of the lower grades.

If you can get a grade bump to PO-1, Braddick and others may pay handsomely for it.

12S in XF is a very tough coin to find...recommend you buy a 62.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Bringing up this thread from a while back -- I ebayed that 1912-S Fr-2 last week, and it brought $62 plus shipping & insurance! I sent if off, let's see if it sticks.
