Glowing Germania & The Best Coin Shop Experience Ever.

I was in Stuttgart this weeked to meet a friend I decided to go early on Friday so I could visit Meister & Sonntag's coin and medal shop. It's a wonderously beautiful shop filled with rarities and museum pieces and unslabbed, unholdered and as naked as they day they were minted.

I said hello to the shop owner, acted polite and respectful, and then I cut to the chase; I originally wanted one of those Frankfurt Thalers from the 1860s. They indeed had one and in my price range AND it was pretty nice. But I wanted to see more and the shop owner accomodated! He took nearly every tray out from behind the glass, 4 at a time and left me to look at the coins and medals at my own leisure while he worked in the back. Just completely trusting, leaving me with thousands of Euro of exposed coins in medals.

I asked about some Goetz medals for Scott, but they didn't have any big cast ones. He went in the back for a while and when he came back he showed me a medal and said "This is the most common Goetz medal" and I smiled and said I already have one of course. Shotly afterwards he came back and handed me a wonderful, beautiful auction catalogue for their big September auction. "This will give you a lot to do this weekend" he said.

I wanted something unique, maybe even unusual, something all of you haven't seen before too, something in my price range too. Then I found it!

May I present to you an 1895 silver medal commemorating the 80th birthday of Bismarck. On the reverse you have Germania at Bismark's birthplace and she's glowing sith some blue toning. On the obverse you see an unusual bust of Bismark in what seems to be a coyboy hat. The edge lettering reads "Bismark - Segenmünze" which means "Bismark - Benediction coin (???)".

It was just too cool for me to pass up. They even knocked off 5 euro off the price.

The pics. I'll probably take more tonight or after a nice long nap (I stayed with two guys from Grand Cayman Island in the youth hostel and boy could they snore!).

    Great Medal DH.

Did he have any Goetz pattern coins? Can you get anymore catalogs?

  • They didn't seem to have very many patters, I don't think that's what they specialize in. They had about 3 Goetz silver medals but that's it.

They have their catalogue online apparently but with not as many images. Their website is at http://www.coinsmedals.com/
  • awesome. I love the blue toning on the top one.
  • Wow! That is a spectacular looking medal. I bet the picture does not do it justice.

Nice snag Phil....image It's about time you ran into someone who treated you with respect too... If you'd like, I could look through some of my auction catalogs and PM you a value if you're interested.

I leave a week from today for Russia. Found out this week that the apartment we have sublet is a 3 minute walk across the Moika River to the entrance of the Hermitage. I have been given a number of coin dealer addresses to visit while in St. Petersburg but I think I will be cautious as counterfeits abound in the country. Unfortunately the longest stint in Germany will be our five hour layover in Frankfurt on the return home. Perhaps we can get together in the late Winter/early Spring when I return to Germany for an extended visit. I'll rent a car and we can terrorize the country together image

I love those myriad shades of blue, especially in the recesses of the devices.

    Absolutely superb! image

    BREATH TAKING!
  • Thanks guys. I uploaded a new pic too (seen at the top).

One of the disadvantages of this medals is that it does have hairlines, but the colour looks natural. I was speaking with Scott and hairlines can indeed be a problem with coins from Europe. But I'm happy with my medal.
  • VERY nice medal!

  • Hello Darkhorse!

If you are interested in older German coins, I can give you a really good adress in
hamburg, where I live. Here is a good coin dealer with a great offer of coins.
Actually I get all my US and Canadian coins from there for very good prices.
Specially the canadian mint does not ship to Europe and the US mint take horroble prices for postage!
Cheaper than any other german coin dealer. He has also a lot of german coins for
a good price. He also send the coins in Germany!
If you are interested I can send you the adress of him.

Scandinavian and US coins are my pleasure!

    1895 medal by Oertel.
    28.46g
    38.7mm

Bennert 162 (I'm not sure what this indication is, perhaps a catologue reference).

    Thanks.
  • Hello!

All I found at internet right now is that:

    link

It is a book I think:
