He's Joesph I, Holy Roman Emperor. I agree he has sort of a glam rock look to him.

    The legends translate to:
"IOSPHUS D G ROM IMP SE AV G HV BO REX" = "Joseph, By the Grace of God, Romen Emperor Semper Augustus, Germany, Hungary, Bohemia King"

"ARCHID AVST DVX BV COM TYR" = "Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, Count of Tyrol"

I upgraded my previous Joseph thaler yesterday.image

I like that! I dunno exactly what the legend says but it'll be something like...

Joseph by the grace of God Holy Roman Emperor and King of Austria? Hungary? and Bo?

Does BV on the reverse stand for Brunswick? DUX is Duke, COM (i'm guessing Earl/Baron/Count)

Just a rought guess, i'll probably be wrong (my Experience being with British coins and all).
  • Guess i should have looked further down hey? wooops!

    Yes Burgundy!

I took these trying a different method from my normal way. I shot these image threw a standing magnifying glass.

  • Wow! Thanks to everyone for posting some very nice photos. Cman, me thinks we need more info on that beautiful pattern. It appears the figure with the crown may have two right hands, the thumb on the left hand should be behind the crown not in front of it.

MSD61, nice coins and an interesting idea of using the magnifying glass. I am not an expert but I would venture adding a second light source might brighten up that farthing image.

" You got the whole set with gold plating???? Could they have been plated later? "

Not the entire set, just the 2, Drei, and 5 Mark. The 10 and 20 Mark are listed in Schaaf under "vergoldet". These have been authenticated by both a dealer and a collector in Germany and are not later gold plated pieces. Actually I haven't heard or seen any Goetz that have been bastardized like some other coin issues you can find on Ebay. The collector I mentioned has the only other vergoldet in these denominations that I am aware of...

Cool. What's underneath the gold plating?

Well, I already posted these in a few other places, but since there's a picture post, and since these are my first digital camera pictures ever, here they are again. I am maybe about to graduate from the old scanner...after some practice.

Reimage of my detecting buddy Billy's dug 1819 large cent- looks better than the old scan.

    image

Some arrowheads found in NC years ago.

    image

Second pic of arrowheads- with flash.

    image

Blue "feather edge" plate fragment from the old Hamilton Plantation site. Late 1700's to early 1800's. Most likely 1820's-30's.

    image

Porcelain doll head found on a late-1800's site in Crescent, GA, which also yielded Steve ("Millenium")'s 1848 large cent and my 1876 Indian cent last month. The 1819 cent above was also found very near this site.

    image

Indian pottery fragment found recently near the presumed site of the long-lost Spanish mission of Santo Domingo de Asajo, Saint Simons Island, GA. I found a 1658 Spanish coin there in 1998. The mission was established in 1595, destroyed by English slavers in 1661, rebuilt, and finally burned by pirates in 1684. This pottery sherd may date to the mission period or it may be prehistoric- I'm not really sure.

    image

Old pocket watch movement found by eyesight alone in an embankment along the Darien, GA waterfront, along with a large portion of early pottery fragments (including some "Feather Edge" pieces like the one above). Probably mid-1800's. The embankment is beside the ruins of some old cotton warehouses that were burned by Federal troops in June of 1863 (an event dramatized in the 1989 film "Glory"). This old watch part may date from around the time the warehouses burned.

No, not a wooden nickel, but a rather rare wooden medal!! It's from the US Centennial Intl. Expo at Philadelphia. It amazes me it has stayed in such nice condition for nearly 125 years!

Less "rustic" is this modern Italian medal for a dog show in San Remo on the Riviera:
